A "splitting" tone

So which kind of Elixirs should I put on my Taylor to make it sound just like a Martin; polys or nanos?

For me the polys are "out". It's between the regular nanos and the pb's. My conclusion thus far, regulars on a "bright" guitar and PB on a "darker" one. Give it a couple of weeks for "best results", however. Unlike Martin SP's, which sound good from the get-go but then die a "premature" death.

So Martins for Studio/live and e-licks for the living room-slash-boudoir, is what I'm saying here....

Odd, I've been using the internet since the late 80s....

I suspect that tone has almost nothing to do with the black and white portrayal of these products. Instead it's driven by societal factors, fashion if you will. People love to hate elixirs because the Polys feel different and they're just so ... so plebeian. No true connoisseur could be enthused at a product whose primary marketing strategy is based on longevity. I bet you could market the same strings by claiming that the coating "inhibits the early oxidation of string surface, allowing the string to breathe and maintain the the same composition throughout it's cross-section. This allows a purer tone as the string itself maintinans a more consistent composition throughout it's somewhat shorter life." Recommend changing every two weeks, and the elixir haters would love them.

The love hate of Taylors similarly has nothing much to do with the guitars. Market them under a different name and with a different strategy and the sides will switch.

Of course some people love or hate these things for tonal reasons. I'm sure there are people who wouldn't like the sound of a Taylor even if it were made by Martin. But these aren't the people who are polarizing the discussions.

Ahhh, so you're going to "invoke" the "sheep" theory. Can't argue with that. A lot of people do have a "herd" mentality. However, I must add that I'm not one of those who are "polarizing the discussions".

Also, I was referring to the the mass "appeal-ization" of the net which began in the 90's. HC, for one, was nothing but a "barren wasteland" in the 80's, I believe....

Yup, it's sheep. Polarization is herd behavior.

Jeez, no wonder I can't stand Taylors, they've always got Elixirs on them.

I've played so many Taylors in stores that I haven't liked because they've had Elixirs on them. I have a buddy with a 714ce that he strings up with Martin SPs (my favorite) and it sounds 100x better than any other 714 I've played.
