Members babablowfish Posted June 23, 2007 Members Posted June 23, 2007 It is a risk to travel with a guitar on a plane. At the very least, loosen the strings and make sure that the neck is fully supported inside the case - not just under the base of the neck as is common - you can use old tee-shirts or bubble wrap perhaps. Then put the guitar case inside a bigger box and pack it with lots of peanuts/bubble wrap. There is a guitar case called the Clam that is supposed to protect guitars during shipping - here is a link:http://www.casextreme.com/madels_pages/acoustic.htm Another option is to fly down, go to a guitar store and buy a beater, play the hell out of it and sell it before you leave. Myself, I have a beater that I fly with. If it is destroyed (hasn't happened yet) then "Oh well" I'll just buy another beater.

Members brahmz118 Posted June 23, 2007 Members Posted June 23, 2007 Godin claims that the TRIC case offers impact resistance that's comparable to expensive flight cases. However I have one, and I would not trust it to save my LaPatrie from the baggage tossers -- the shell just seems too flexible. Of course, I haven't tested it, so I could be wrong. But I'd say it's a gamble at best. You could increase your odds by packing it really well, as baba suggests.
Members FloridaSeagull Posted June 23, 2007 Author Members Posted June 23, 2007 Thanks guys i was planning on just putting towels/wrap around teh guitar in its case and then putting the case in a larger box with bubble wrap. What would be something that would normally happen to it? Like would a tuning peg just get broken or worse?
Members Tony Burns Posted June 23, 2007 Members Posted June 23, 2007 Ukes or mandolins are nice substitutes - ukes because the four string are tuned the same as the bottom 4 strings of a guitar( and its small ) and mandolin , because of its size factor- its also fun to explore something different when you travel , most travel guitars are exspensive and junk unless you pay alot for them . i know you want to take your guitar , unless your willing to spend at least a couple of hundred on a better case i wouldnt put it threw luggage .
Members T.B. Posted June 23, 2007 Members Posted June 23, 2007 How long will you be in Florida? If it's less than a month I'd waited out and keep my guitar at home. If you must Baba's idea seems practical. You could UPS/FedEx your guitar to Florida. I've had two guitars shipped to me recently one in a gig-gag the other hard-shell case. The gig bag guitar was encased (a box within a box) with the interior boxed shaped on an angle with a humidifier between the strings. The hard-shell case was in a box with piece of cardboard fitting down and over the top of case, keeping the guitar stationary and in the middle of box. For add protection I guess you could add some peanuts.http://www.pjguitar.com/shipping-repairs.htmhttp://www.uline.com/AdvSearchResult.asp?view=ALL&SubGroup=7906 &Source=04http://www.packnboxnow.com/Default.aspx?ISC_SiteName=CustomBoxesNowGo to your local music store and see it they will give/sale you a box. Members babablowfish Posted June 23, 2007 Members Posted June 23, 2007 What would be something that would normally happen to it? Like would a tuning peg just get broken or worse? Worse. The headstock could be snapped off. Also the whole thing could get crushed. It happens.
Members T.B. Posted June 23, 2007 Members Posted June 23, 2007 Worse. The headstock could be snapped off. Also the whole thing could get crushed. It happens.Yep. Sure to bubble wrap that headstock. Make sure you get/purchase a box made for shipping guitars. Also insure your ax for it's value so just in case it gets smashed or damage, you can buy another one. Seagulls hard-case and proper packing; I think you're guitar will be OK. Trina
Members FloridaSeagull Posted June 24, 2007 Author Members Posted June 24, 2007 Well i found a good solution i will be able to ship the guitar in its case in a box to my Florida resort. This package will be pretty cheap and it is insured. I think haveing FedEx just take care of it will be safer than a plane. Then once i get there i will just pick it up at the office, i already called the resort they say that happens all the time. THANKS EVERYONE YOU REALLY DID HELP!
