Members therichardsgang Posted June 25, 2007 Members Posted June 25, 2007 I have been asked by an acquaintance if I can give him guitar lessons. Why is it that when people hear you play they automatically think you can teach? any case, I have no idea where to start. Some simple fingerstyle songs and exercises - but what? - any ideas? or can anyone point me to a web resource that could help? - I've looked around and am boggled by the choice!

Members LaurentB Posted June 25, 2007 Members Posted June 25, 2007 What's the guitar playing level of this person? Does he/she start from zero or did he/she already play some guitar? When it's an absolute beginner, try teach him/her some easy chords to start with, an Em and Am for instance. The first steps on guitar are hard, don't overload the student in the beginning, that can easily lead to too much frustration. Then try to find some songs with very simple chords. When he or she can already play it depends on the level what you could do. By all means ASK what this person wants to learn. Some only want to play some chords, others want to learn fingerpicking, some even want to learn solo pieces.

But plenty of time to practice, and the desire/commitment to do so Ok, start slowly then. Be sure to set targets that are within his grasp, start with the very simple chords (I always start with chords because at least that makes a nice sound. Technically, it's more logical to start with simple melodies but I can recall how eager I was when I started to finally hear some chords).Ask him what music he listens to and what he'd like to play.
