Members n4vgm Posted June 23, 2007 Members Posted June 23, 2007 Experienced electric player here but just got one of those MF Rogue round neck spider resonators to get back to my long lost acoustic roots. For $150 and some "tweaking" it sounds better than you'd think. Been enjoying finger picking and even figured out "Dust in the wind". I've found that jazz progressions finger picked on a resonator sound real nice. The one thing I want to do is practice slow and precise. When you've been playing over 30 years you know how easy it is to pick up sloppy habits that limit your playing later. Maybe I'll do some open mics to get practice playing and singing. I have stage experience in bands but never solo. So, any ideas for simple finger picked songs or other tips? Thanks!

I bought a Regal roundneck resonator myself and love it. I also enjoy playing simple old tunes like those of the Carter Family. Lately it's been tuned to Open G,trying to learn some bluegrass gospel as well as some blues tunes.
Members kwakatak Posted June 23, 2007 Members Posted June 23, 2007 +1 on James Taylor tunes. Some require a capo though. For example, "Fire and Rain" uses a capo at the 3rd fret. You might also consider checking out Lindsay Buckingham's chops. Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide" is a very easy one to pick up and the live version from "The Dance" DVD has a pretty simple but enjoyable guitar solo. Also, if you have a capo try your hand at "Never Going Back Again" which uses a capo at the 5th fret. Speaking of classic rock songs with capo, the intro to "Hotel California" requires the use of a capo at the 7th fret. Originally it was done with a 12 string but on a 6 string it sounds just fine.
Members n4vgm Posted June 23, 2007 Author Members Posted June 23, 2007 I don't know how I got looking at resonators but after much hunting I decided to try one of the Rogues as it dropped in price. They are certainly different animals and have their own setup issues. The first one they sent was damaged and the second had some glue on the top (which popped right off). My plan is to lower the action, use GHS Rollerwound nickle strings, and eventually install a floating thin humbucker and V/T controls. Then I'd have a guitar that could handle folk/blues/fingerpick/ and hollow body jazz tones. All for about two bills! Since I already have other guitars for pop/rock/blues/fusion this will save me cash and space. Since my style involves lots of movable/jazz chords I don't use a capo. Keep those ideas a'comming!

You can do a lot worse than studying Travis style, Carter style and all the other alternating thumb styles of music. Every fingerpicker out there has learned Freight Train early in her career. Play some blues and ragtime, fool around with a slide. Have some fun on your Rogue playing BBF, RJ, Son House, Bukka, Ry Cooder, John Fahey, and even some Leo. Mark Hanson's books/dvd's have some great materials for intermediate finger style.

I was in Oasis [Ringwood] the other day and played Anji - it elicited the same response from the store owner that I've only ever heard to Stairway to Heaven! ("Anji, that old chestnut - everyone plays that!")Love the tune though Decided I'd take some lessons recently (thought if I've bought a Taylor I ought at least to learn to play it!). Done Wonderful Tonight, Blackbird etc.looking forward to actually learning some music instad of blundering my way through!
