Satin finish and paint...

I have a Simon & Patrick with a Cedar top and a satin finish, and I'd like to pain some designs on the top, the butt, and the side facing up towards me. Before I get hounded by the anti-paint crowd, it definitely has it's share of battle scars... more even than my '69 Fender, but it still plays great and sounds pretty great. I'm going to go with more earth tone paint choices.

Now, on the custom clothing I make, I use a mixture of treated acrylic paint and spray enamel for the desired effect. I imagine the untreated acrylic would probably be adequate, but what kind of sealer would i put over it since the wood has a satin finish? If worse comes to worse and it sounds terrible, I could always completely strip it and re-finish it at my friends' shoppe. Have any of you done this before, and if so, do you have any tips???

Thanks!

Well, I believe that Godin uses lacquer finish on most of their guitars. I'd phone them and make sure. So any sealer that would stick to lacquer should work just fine. I'd imagine the fact that it's satin finish should make a sealer stick to it a little better. Try calling a local luthier and asking him what he thinks would work. I'm sure there are some around who have refinished guitars over old finish or know how to, and wether or not stripping it is a good option. I can't say I know much about it, so my advice is to call a pro, most are great, helpful guys. Just do us all a favor and don't use thick paint that'll muffle that great guit's sound...but you probably already knew that. Oh and pics would be great once you're done!

Thanks... talking to Godin is a great idea. I will definitely paint lightly... I'm think a Buddha under the bridge would be lovely, as well as some stars and moons on the upper bout. I'll email Godin tonite before I head to bed, and hopefully I'll hear something later today!
