Members missedmyexit Posted July 11, 2007 Members Posted July 11, 2007 I have a 95 Epi PR5E I bought new over a decade ago. I was looking up the Specs on it today and it lists it as "Select Spruce" Is this solid or lam?

I was looking up the Specs on it today and it lists it as "Select Spruce" Is this solid or lam? Sounds like a nice way of saying "Laminate Spruce Top." Manufacturers who DO use solid spruce tops generally are pretty straightforward in declaring that fact & usually trumpet it loudly in the guitar's description. This is not to say there's anything wrong with laminate tops or 'select spruce' tops, but in the guitar market, the word "solid" carries a lot of weight.
Members Dave W. Posted July 11, 2007 Members Posted July 11, 2007 Have a look at the sound hole. The edge of the wood is pretty visible. If it is lam/ply you should be able to see the different layers, but not always, particularly if the wood has darkened a good bit.
Members DonK Posted July 11, 2007 Members Posted July 11, 2007 "Select" usually means "laminated", especially with inexpensive and moderately priced guitars.
Members Hudman Posted July 11, 2007 Members Posted July 11, 2007 "Select Spruce" = laminate. Almost every single laminate guitar is sold with a "select spruce" top.
