Members sixstring422 Posted July 16, 2007 Members Posted July 16, 2007 When you play acoustic live, what do you do. Do you mic it or use a pickup, if so what kind, Do you plug into the PA or do you use an amp? What produces the best sound to your ears? Did your electronics come stock or did you buy them later?

Welcome Sixstring, When I can I like to mic up (Shure SM 57) to make things smiple and keep the sound & tone of the guitar that I'm using as natural as possible. But there are times (depending who's the audiance & the musicans that I will playing with) that I will have change up my set up. I use Fishman (I like their products): Pro-EQ Platinum Bass Preamp/EQ/D.I. with these pickups: Natural II Preamp, & Neo D. P.A. - using the house P.A. if possible If I have to us an amp, I use a Rivera - Sedona 55 Combo "Great Amp". It does the job, very loud with great tone. I experimented with the electronics in each of my acoustics over the years. I have gone from using stock electronics to changing after market: pickups (& there position), preamps, EQ's.
Members d28andm1911a1 Posted July 16, 2007 Members Posted July 16, 2007 I use soundboard pickups K&K mini. Run it to the PA or if there is a house PA I run it to my unpowered board and then to the PA.
Members Terry Allan Hall Posted July 16, 2007 Members Posted July 16, 2007 Depends on the gig circumstances: Very small/low volume gigs (nursing homes/hospitals/smaller restaurants/busking) - Crate Taxi 30 Larger gigs - my PA system (Carvin PA1200/Carvin LM12s) or house system, if warranted. Larger gigs with loud drummer - acoustic amp (lately, a borrowed Crate CA60), DIed into PA. My acoustic guitars have after-market passive USTs and are plugged into a Baggs PADI, and when playing w/ my trio, a pedal board (just the PA's EQ and reverb @ solo gigs).
Members min7b5 Posted July 16, 2007 Members Posted July 16, 2007 I play about 125+ dates a year. Most are private event type things. I would say 85% of the time I use just a mic (ATpro37 or Audix i5) in front of my Santa Cruz OM. For smaller places I use just a Fishman Loudbox 100 ( love that little thing-great with mics). Often I'll add one 300 watt RCF powered speaker on a stand to the Loudbox for medium places. For bigger outdoor things (more than 200 people) I'll use two powered speakers on stands and a Baggs Para and Nanoverb as a preamp. Maybe for one out of six gigs I'll blend in about 25% of a K&K Pure Mini pickup with the mic (usually because it's windy or I'm too close to chatty people). I basically never use just a pickup.
Members guit30 Posted July 16, 2007 Members Posted July 16, 2007 I play thru a large house PA at church, I use a Fishman NeoD run thru a Guyatone ST2 compressor thru a LR Baggs para DI to the house board. Sounds great, mostly cause of our awesome system Jim
Members daklander Posted July 19, 2007 Members Posted July 19, 2007 Live gigs, mostly Fishman Rare Earth Single Coil direct to PA with my main player. Other times, depending on venue and circumstances, may mic the guitar with dynamic or condenser mics or a blend of mic and pickup.
Members whit townsend Posted July 19, 2007 Members Posted July 19, 2007 Only miced my D28 for years, cause was playing bluegrass for the most part. I'm thinking about adding a K&K pure mini or a Baggs Ibeam tho, to play it in the church band.
Members EvilTwin Posted July 19, 2007 Members Posted July 19, 2007 Dean Markley "Sweet Spot" UST, straight to the PA (sometimes a bass amp). I'm thinking about the K&K Pure Western mini, though. I like the DM because it's hot enough to not require a preamp; the K&K might have a hotter signal and sound more natural, to boot.
Members Fantfool Posted July 20, 2007 Members Posted July 20, 2007 You can use the k&k minis without an extra preamp. It's nice not to have to worry about 9v batteries. The preamps would definately give you more gain and also control at the guitar that you don't have with the mini by itself. So it's a bit of a tradeoff. But they sound awsome even with the minis by themselves. If anything, they are a tad bass heavy at around 500hz. But any kind of an eq will fix that easily. If you like natural acoustic sound when you electrify, k&k is the one.
Members eor Posted July 20, 2007 Members Posted July 20, 2007 rare earth humbucker into the electric rig love, eorsometimes the mama bear is in the chain, too

Members Fantfool Posted July 20, 2007 Members Posted July 20, 2007 How feedback resistant are they, though? The only time I have had feedback issues with mine is if my amp volume is turned up high and I am standing within a few feet of the amp. I just plug into my amp and then into the board so I don't need to turn my amp volume up high so I really haven't had any issues with feedback. Hope that helps.
