Members Janelled Posted July 20, 2007 Members Posted July 20, 2007 I've been searching for an all real wood acoustic, with the dreadnought body shape for under 1000 dollars. I also do not like white/cream body and neck bindings. I do not care about electronics, as I will probably install some later. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Martin-D15-Custom-Spruce-and-Rosewood-Acoustic-Guitar?sku=515888 This guitar has met all of my criteria so far, but the only downside is I won't be able to play it before I buy. I was wondering if people had any experience with this guitar, or have general opinions! Thanks in advance, I appreciate any and all input.
Members Queequeg Posted July 20, 2007 Members Posted July 20, 2007 The CFM 15 series is a highly respected line of solid wood, domestic guitars. Great value.I have owned a couple of 15 series, although both have/had mahogany tops, rather than spruce. Nice guitar. It's a player!
Members rjoxyz Posted July 20, 2007 Members Posted July 20, 2007 My first Martin was the mahogany version of that very guitar. Excellent value. Mine seemed to "open up" very quickly and I always wondered if it was the A-frame bracing. It is lightly built and very resonant. I don't think you will be disappointed, especially if you favor the Martin tone.
Members JasmineTea Posted July 20, 2007 Members Posted July 20, 2007 There's a few other Martins in the 15 and 16 series under a grand. Look around at the Martin site, knock 35% off what's listed. Don't forget the Larrivee 03 series...although they do have off-white binding.

Aye, I'm not a huge fan of the stock D-15, for some reason the red/brown color just doesn't do it for me, and the binding on the Larrivee 03 series makes me dislike it. I think it's kind of silly that I value the appearance of the guitar so much, but I want an instrument that is visually and aurally beautiful. I appreciate the suggestions and input!
Members BackPocket Posted July 21, 2007 Members Posted July 21, 2007 The guitar center in my area had the d-15 custom spruce/rosewood. It was nice. I think I would have looked more seriously at it if it was a 1 3/4s nut width. If you have GC in your area, check them out and see if they carry them. The one by me usually sells this guitar for 1000 but they have discounted it to 850 for on sale days. You can get them to go down I'm sure.

Members guitarist21 Posted July 21, 2007 Members Posted July 21, 2007 Spend 100 more and get a D-16GTJim Or you could spend a couple hundrer bucks less and get an Epi Masterbilt. Ellen
Members Janelled Posted July 22, 2007 Author Members Posted July 22, 2007 Or you could spend a couple hundrer bucks less and get an Epi Masterbilt. All of the Masterbilts I played at Guitar Center a while ago were either horribly set up or lemons. I should go back soon and try some more out, maybe a second try would yield different results!
Members DJ in FL Posted July 22, 2007 Members Posted July 22, 2007 Check out www.myfavoriteguitars.com if you are looking at Martin. I have never found a better price or better service, plus they are just NICE people to deal with!
Members johnfrusciante Posted July 24, 2007 Members Posted July 24, 2007 i've feel obligated to speak up for the 15's. i've had the mahogany model for five years, and it's a fine guitar. i also have a d-28--spruce/rosewood martins sound beautiful. the a-frame on the 15 makes them sturdier, in my experience. mine has "opened-up" a lot--a bit louder and a lot more expressive. i've heard the satin finish helps them open up faster. any way, i highly recommend them.
