Members martingibson70 Posted July 28, 2007 Members Posted July 28, 2007 I've been listening to this great country/ blues band from Australia, The Audrey's. Sounds like they make good use of one on their recordings.
Members JasmineTea Posted July 29, 2007 Members Posted July 29, 2007 I've got one. A cheap one, that is. Wanna buy it? $100.
Members Muddslide Posted July 29, 2007 Members Posted July 29, 2007 I used to have one. It was made by Lark in the Morning I think It wasn't a very good instrument but I've heard the gold Tone brand ones are much better. And Deering makes a 6 and a 12 string that I'm sure are great. But expensive. It was fun to mess around on, but I'd prefer to just play a real banjo and in fact am thinking of getting another one soon. I haven't had one in about 10 years. But I think a good one would be great for a guitarist wanting that sound without any learning curve.

The 4-string tenor banjo I tune CGDA? The 4 string ukelele-banjo? The open-back 5-string? The 8-string mandolin-banjo? Obviously, not the 6-string guitar-banjo... Probably not my friend Wendy's bass banjo, either...

Members martingibson70 Posted July 29, 2007 Author Members Posted July 29, 2007 Thanks for all of the comments. The one I played in my local store was a gold tone, $499. It's good to know they have a solid rep but, $499...? As far as real banjo's go, the reason I asked the question was that the Audrey's use it like a guitar with arpegios, chords, and riffs- no forward or backward rolls. They lay it very nicely into their mix. Ideally I'd like to be proficient on banjo (5-string) and mandolin. However, guitar (electric, acoustic, slide, altered tunings, and fingerpicking) is constantly providing me with more than enough to keep me challenged.
Members Jon Hiller Posted July 29, 2007 Members Posted July 29, 2007 I've sold a couple of the Dean ones, they sell for somewhere around $269 or so, if I remember right, maybe a bit more or a bit less, it's been a little while. I thought they were pretty darn cool for the money. For an inexpensive piece they were made ok, they actually have Grover tuners on them instead of the cheapo type of guitar tuners that most inexpensive banjos have.
