Members Misha III Posted August 8, 2007 Members Posted August 8, 2007 I'm looking for something smaller than my dreadnaught (Cort Earth Custom). I thought I had found something that I liked and gave a deposit for a Yamaha APX-3. Link: http://www.giles.com/yamaha1/PR/MUS/guitar/2003/APX3_0903.html When I came back home I checked the specifications on the Internet: the guitar has a laminated top! The guy in the shop told me the opposite! The guitar sounds average unplugged but very good plugged in. It is very comfortable, the neck feels good... but the sound won't improve over the years! The thing is I don't even have an amp! I tried a Yamaha APX-5 that sounded worst and felt worst in my hands. I think that one had a solid top but the setup was bad and it was much more expensive. Now, I don't know what to do: the guitar seems to be very solid and I could carry it easily without worrying like I do for my more expensive and all solid wood Cort Earth Custom... On the the other hand, the Cort is sooo sweet, I might find it difficult to play on a cheaper guitar. I wonder if I should save for a Larrivee OM-03R that would be in the same category of the Cort. Members ceenare Posted August 8, 2007 Members Posted August 8, 2007 Hi If you like your Cort, look at Cort's SFX line. Same shape as the Yamaha APX. I have a Cort SFX 5. It's definately a solid top and has a Fishman Classic 4T Equilizer and pickup. Beautiful fit and finish. I think I paid $450.00 in Alberta. Vern
Members GarysBlues Posted August 8, 2007 Members Posted August 8, 2007 I just picked up a Yamaha APX-5-12A..............So you think hese are SOLID? I was just wondering this. It came in my shop so I paid very little for it.I think it sounds Great and the Action is very good on it.Matter of Fact after cleaning, tuning, the Tone has impressed me. It sounds better plugged in than Acoustic. But it not to shabby unplugged either. But as far as information? I haven't found anything on the 5. So its hard to tell whats what. I looked here and on E-Bay. I have yet to check Yamaha's sight though.
Members GarysBlues Posted August 8, 2007 Members Posted August 8, 2007 From the Yamaha sight .................. the 5 just states Spruce Top. So I take that to mean Laminated. Usually if they are Solid then it states SOLID. Oh Well.
Members zenbu Posted August 8, 2007 Members Posted August 8, 2007 but those are made to be plugged in.
Members Misha III Posted August 8, 2007 Author Members Posted August 8, 2007 - GaryBlues, you're right. The APX-5 has a laminated top too! - Zenbu, I know they are made to be plugged in... and the amp I tried in the shop sounded very good and was 269$ CAD... so not so expensive! I still don't know what to do! I'd want to have both the Larrivee OM-03R and the Yamaha! I will take a look at the Cort's SFX line though!
