Members kwakatak Posted August 8, 2007 Members Posted August 8, 2007 After perusing the latest Acoustic Guitar magazine and getting a minor GAS twinge from the Santa Cruz on the cover, it occurred to me that nobody here ever talks about them here. Nor is there a mention of the Breedlove Revival series. Has anyone here ever tried any?
Members guitarist21 Posted August 8, 2007 Members Posted August 8, 2007 I've only ever played one Santa Cruz and I was unimpressed. And I don't see a whole lot of Breedloves either. The GC by me must not sell a lot of them because they sure don't stock a lot of them. Ellen
Members Queequeg Posted August 8, 2007 Members Posted August 8, 2007 I have GAS for a scgc baritone. esp. now since Larrivee has discontinued them.they have (not surprisingly) an unofficial forum too. And they adhere to a few more rules and regs than here @ the HCAG, as do most of the guitar forums out there in the ethersphere. Richard Hoover is a very personable guy.Ironically, since it has come up here recently, they have some advice for folks starting a thread on their forum. and I quote:8. Try to talk about the art of playing and technique and not 100% gear talk.make of it what you will. They build some beautiful guitars. here's a nice used hogtop for sale. They pay special attention to their finishes (eg.: the French polish)OK, so which is it? French or Polish?
Members denvertrakker Posted August 8, 2007 Members Posted August 8, 2007 I know that Janis Ian played a Santa Cruz for a long time, and it always sounded pretty terrific. However, she has now switched to Kevin Ryan guitars. BTW, the current issue has Patty Griffin on the cover, with a Gibson. Proving once again it ain't the arrow, it's the Indian...
Members Greymuzzle Posted August 8, 2007 Members Posted August 8, 2007 Queequeg Good question. Apparently Polish is quite like a Czech up but French is entirely different. Allegedly.
Members riffmeister Posted August 8, 2007 Members Posted August 8, 2007 When I was dread & OM shopping several years ago, I tried a number of SC guitars. All were very nice in every respect, but they didn't grab me like the Collings that I wound up with. That said, there is a used 1996 SC OM at my local shop which just haunts me. It's all tricked out with abalone inlays, sunburst top, gold-plated tuners, Brazilian b/s, etc. Definitely not my cup of tea, aesthetically speaking, but wow, it sounds absolutely fantastic! I'd consider taking it home if it weren't for the over the top cosmetics......and the $10K asking price.
Members Hudman Posted August 8, 2007 Members Posted August 8, 2007 I think Breedlove makes some awesome guitars. I never had the chance to play a Santa Cruz. I think most of the folks here are stuck with the selection at Guitar Center, Sam Ash and small time mom and pop shops that don't carry Santa Cruz guitars.
Members Queequeg Posted August 8, 2007 Members Posted August 8, 2007 Hud, take a road trip with me one of these days up to Elderly. Is a fun afternoon. not too far. an hour from Ann Arbor. a bit further for you, I know.Huss & Dalton, scgc, plenty of others... nice folks, too.
Members BackPocket Posted August 8, 2007 Members Posted August 8, 2007 I want a santa cruz - it's just that the starting price of 2700 for the OM/PW is a decent bit over the last guitar purchase I made. Maybe when I'm older, and have a more stable financial situation. I think there is less talk about them here because a) price, B) they only make 300 guitars a year so it's hard to get your hands on them and c) major stores don't carry them. just guessing on those points.

I'm learning to coveth this guitar.
Members d03nut Posted August 9, 2007 Members Posted August 9, 2007 That's because after a while on these forums, sometimes people sort of take their foot off the pedal or go into "cruz control" mode. As a result, we tend to discuss the same topics over and over again, which by extension will include the same brands. And in the end the "Love you Breed" is equal to the "Breed you Love"....
Members D For Kate Posted August 9, 2007 Members Posted August 9, 2007 well, if anyone is interested I posted a home recording of my SCGC 000 coupla weeks ago....
Members Cripes Posted August 9, 2007 Members Posted August 9, 2007 And in the end the "Love you Breed" is equal to the "Breed you Love".... Rythm can be a bite to maintain, though.
Members DonK Posted August 9, 2007 Members Posted August 9, 2007 I've played several Santa Cruz models, actually a dozen or so. I've always been really impressed with them, but in that price range I always start thinking about other brands.
Members Pascal Posted August 9, 2007 Members Posted August 9, 2007 I've been very curious about Eastman's flat tops and archbacks too... but can't find much feedback from players. And of course can't find a single one to play locally. Here's a maple back, from Jeff Hale's website: And a rosewood back, from tiptop.se: If they're as good value for money as their archtops, then I want three. Or four.
Members Queequeg Posted August 9, 2007 Members Posted August 9, 2007 right, Pascal. I haven't played their flat tops, but I bought am archtop from Jeff Hale a couple of years ago. very nice. and the back of my archtop looks like the back of that maple you posted.

I have an AR905E on order, myself. Sunburst top... and classic back, like that maple one I posted.
