Members AiC Cantrell Posted August 14, 2007 Members Posted August 14, 2007 Im looking for a medium priced dreadnought size acoustic, I have about $400. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
Members rjoxyz Posted August 14, 2007 Members Posted August 14, 2007 For just a little more, you are in Epi Masterbilt territory. Incredible guitars, especially at their price point.

Members Freeman Keller Posted August 14, 2007 Members Posted August 14, 2007 While I've never played one, several of our forumites have various models on Blueridge. Maury's did some interesting audio comparisons between Blueridge and the equivalent Martins (they are a dealer for both) http://www.maurysmusic.com/blueridge_vs__martin
Members drnihili Posted August 14, 2007 Members Posted August 14, 2007 Walden makes some great dreads in that range. I also like the sound of Norman. As mentioned, a bit more gets you the Epiphone Masterbilt line, or perhaps the Guild GAD.
Members wraithxyz Posted August 14, 2007 Members Posted August 14, 2007 A Art&Luthiere is a pretty decent guitar for cheap.
Members knockwood Posted August 14, 2007 Members Posted August 14, 2007 I agree with pretty much everything recommended so far: Epi Masterbilt, Blueridge, A&L, Norman. I'm not familiar with Walden, but I've heard a lot of positive comments from forumites.
Members AiC Cantrell Posted August 14, 2007 Author Members Posted August 14, 2007 An Epi eh? Wheres it built, I have an Epi Elitist LP and it still astounds me with it's quality (MiJ). Best guitar I've ever had (including recent Gibbys)
Members Harmonycat Posted August 14, 2007 Members Posted August 14, 2007 Those Epiphone Masterbilt Guitars are very good......but I live in Brampton Ontario, which is close to you and you are going to get soaked if you buy it here......to the tune of about $700.00 CDN. Buy a Simon Patrick SP6, Norman ST-40, or a Seagull which are made in Quebec, if you are buying in Canada. They are all very good and can be had for under $400.00 CDN. Americans pay a premium for our Made in Canada guitars, like the ones I mentioned. Or buy a Masterbilt from a reputable dealer listing on Ebay in the USA, and save a bundle, since you will get hosed if you buy it here.
Members knockwood Posted August 14, 2007 Members Posted August 14, 2007 An Epi eh? Wheres it built, I have an Epi Elitist LP and it still astounds me with it's quality (MiJ). Best guitar I've ever had (including recent Gibbys) Made in China. Masterbilt's quality and specs are, IMHO, ridiculously good for their price range. Forget about the price range for a second, and they're just really good guitars on their own merits. Give one a test drive if you can.
Members Broadus Posted August 15, 2007 Members Posted August 15, 2007 I second the Norman ST40. Reviews of the ST40 seem consistently good.
Members Broadus Posted August 15, 2007 Members Posted August 15, 2007 Everything I've read about the Epiphone Masterbuilts has been good. If I had $500 to spend and needed (wanted?) a new guitar, the Masterbuilts would be on my "got-to-try-it" list, especially the EF500R. Bill
Members Bernie P. Posted August 15, 2007 Members Posted August 15, 2007 Just stumbled on to these.http://www.musiciansfriend.com/navigation/guitars?N=100001+705206
Members MattSkibaIsGOD Posted August 15, 2007 Members Posted August 15, 2007 I'd suggest a Walden too. I have a D550 that does the dread thing wonderfully.
