Members FloridaSeagull Posted August 17, 2007 Members Posted August 17, 2007 How good is this brand of guitars i found a used one for 200 bucks it was the Art and Lutherie Cedar, it sounded pretty nice...what do you guys think of this deal?? I heard they are with the makers of Seagull???PLEASE RESPOND!!! THANKS!
Members drnihili Posted August 17, 2007 Members Posted August 17, 2007 Though personally I can't stand them, they do get a lot of good press here. They are made by Godin, who also makes Seagull, Simon & Patrick, LaPatrie, and Norman. They are generally well thought of. Play the guitar. If you like the sound and feel, it is a good guitar.
Members Rada Posted August 17, 2007 Members Posted August 17, 2007 When it comes to Godin, for me, it's all about Norman and A&L The A&L Cedar is fantastic guitar for $200....I love Godin Cedar While you are getting a quality instrument, I'd take the advice of drnihili and just try it out first and see if you like it. You never know if it's right for you.
Members happy-man Posted August 17, 2007 Members Posted August 17, 2007 Like drnihili said, made by Godin. In general, I have not cared for most of the Godin guitars I've tried. I have a friend with a cedar topped S&P dread that I like. A local music store had a bunch of Godin guitars that they had gotten from a closed store. I thought I had played most of them, some Normans, some A&L, some S&P. None of them did anything for me. But a few weeks ago I saw one I hadn't seen before, a S&P parlor. I really like it. It was marked $410, and I got it for $210. It's been a couple of weeks now. I really like it. (Did I already say that?) Like drnihili said, "If you like the sound and feel, it is a good guitar." Its great when you get a guitar that you really like.
Members LaurentB Posted August 17, 2007 Members Posted August 17, 2007 I think these Godin guitars are quite good in their price range. They sound much more alive to me than many other midrange priced guitars.
Members emuhunter Posted August 17, 2007 Members Posted August 17, 2007 My first acoustic was an Art and Lutherie. I loved it. Then I discovered Gibsons. Now it collects dust.
Members babablowfish Posted August 17, 2007 Members Posted August 17, 2007 The Cedar top Art & Lutherie dread is a really nice sounding guitar. It has a nice warm tone and a very comfortable wide fingerboard. That is the one guitar that continually tempts me to break my "no new guitar" pledge.
Members EvilTwin Posted August 17, 2007 Members Posted August 17, 2007 I dig some of the A&L's. I have a Seagull Folk that I love, but I almost bought an A&L all-lam Folk (same guitar, only without the solid top) because it just sounded phenomenal. But as drnihili said, the only thing that matters is if your ears like what they hear.

Every time I sit down and play my A&L Folk Cedar I fall in love with it again. I have my first wedding gig where I'll be playing fingerstyle coming up in April and I thought of picking up another guitar with some electronics in it... instead I tried a Bill Lawrence A-245C and the guitar took on a whole new life. Like a few before me have said, try it if you love it, buy it. Otherwise it isn't the guitar for you.
Members FloridaSeagull Posted August 17, 2007 Author Members Posted August 17, 2007 sounds like a pretty nice guitar...how well will it put up with an LR Baggs I-Beam in it?
Members Rada Posted August 17, 2007 Members Posted August 17, 2007 I have a nice A&L Cedar Ami that I don't picture myself ever getting rid of it. It's the perfect guitar to play around the house or for travel, and it has a really sweet, warm tone....Also, it's pretty loud and can handle some good strumming which surprised me in the shop, and the quality in the fretwork was quite pleasing haha
Members otter06 Posted August 21, 2007 Members Posted August 21, 2007 Hello, I'm new to this forum and I'm just taking up the guitar again after taking lessons as a child (a long time ago.) Thanks to this thread and the other one about parlor guitars, I just bought a gorgeous blue AMI cedar to take lessons on. This forum has tons of great information and I doubt I ever would have heard of the Art & Lutherie brand without it. So thanks!

Nice to see you back on the board.
Members moo1010321 Posted August 21, 2007 Members Posted August 21, 2007 I had an A&L thinking it was gonna sound like a $1000 guitar. It will not, I repeat will not sound like one. It will carry the frequencies of the wood and will sound like a $200-$300 guitar. But it will not sound like a high end guitar. My personal opinion, save up and buy a Larrivee =)
