Members lauren Posted August 20, 2007 Members Posted August 20, 2007 I can't, I think you need 6 fingers?
Members fist Posted August 20, 2007 Members Posted August 20, 2007 ye i thought that when i first saw it, but i think if you use a half barre with your third finger across the top three strings you can get the rest with your remaining fingers. i think.. wait for cripes to say something so i can see the diagram again.
Members lauren Posted August 20, 2007 Author Members Posted August 20, 2007 Your'e blimmin right guv, :idea:but i definitely need to do some strengthening exercises on my third finger!!! This is gonna be a short thread now!!! Would be interested to know if anyone can play it easily and when they have used this chord. ye i thought that when i first saw it, but i think if you use a half barre with your third finger across the top three strings you can get the rest with your remaining fingers. i think.. wait for cripes to say something so i can see the diagram again.

Members riffmeister Posted August 20, 2007 Members Posted August 20, 2007 take your pinky off the high note in Cripe's avatar and it's a standard way to play a 9th chordfor example B9:X21222the last 222 is barred with 3rd fingerhere's an easier way to play the 13th chord in Cripe's avatar ('cept it's missin' the 9th)G13:3X345Xno barre required! sounds jazzy to move it up chromatically...
Members lauren Posted August 20, 2007 Author Members Posted August 20, 2007 That's neat. take your pinky off the high note in Cripe's avatar and it's a standard way to play a 9th chord for example B9: X21222 the last 222 is barred with 3rd finger here's an easier way to play the 13th chord in Cripe's avatar ('cept it's missin' the 9th) G13: 3X345X no barre required! sounds jazzy to move it up chromatically...
Members JasmineTea Posted August 20, 2007 Members Posted August 20, 2007 I think Cripes avatar would be 221334, but (assuming it's a D) I think I'd use either of these instead. X 51 72 51 73 74 or X X 41 52 52 74 leave out the bass note.

Members Cripes Posted August 20, 2007 Members Posted August 20, 2007 Okay, when I first saw this chord while perusing some jazz chords I laughed to myself, and then at myself after trying to hold it. I thought it was a joke or mis-print before I gave up and relegated it to just a curiosity. So, I hung it up on "my" wall. Since this thread started I tried again and found I can do this without curling my toes: Ist finger, 4th string, 9th fret. 2nd finger, 5th string, 10th fret 3rd finger, half barre strings 1 thru 3, 10th fret 4th finger, 1st string, 12th fret Definitely not my usual faire and a chord that would take constant practice to grab quickly. But, that's pretty true for a lot of jazz chords. Same field, different game.
Members riovine Posted August 20, 2007 Members Posted August 20, 2007 Would be interested to know if anyone can play it easily and when they have used this chord. It's a fairly common jazz voicing for a 13th chord. I can play it pretty easily, but I agree that it can take a little practice moving to it naturally. As for where it is used, it can be used for any place where there is a dominant V7 type harmony.

After a while you can start singing Blue Moon. Members eflat Posted August 21, 2007 Members Posted August 21, 2007 Ha yeah well its just Lauren's [very cockney ] pronunciation of "blooming" which yes, is very similar to "bloody". Dialects are strange
Members lauren Posted August 21, 2007 Author Members Posted August 21, 2007 Interestingly, blimmin is bloomin but not as harsh as bloody, more like saying 'Cripes'. Oh you can also say,'bloomin eck'. pronunciation of "blooming" which yes, is very similar to "bloody". Dialects are strange
Members lauren Posted August 21, 2007 Author Members Posted August 21, 2007 I can understand this notation so much more easily than tab. Thanks.

A little history: I'm the man "formerly known as Sweb" until a snafu prevented me from logging in under that moniker. My vocalized knee-jerk reaction to the snafu is now my new moniker. So, yes, it could very well be "bloomin eck".

Members Etienne Rambert Posted August 21, 2007 Members Posted August 21, 2007 It looks like a typical 9th with a 6th added on the 1st string. So if it's a G9, the added note would be the octave "E" on the first string. I don't know why a 6th added to a 9th would = a 13th. But I'm no expert in music theory. This is an easy chord for me to play though. It's a common chord riff off the 9th. His avatar specifies the 9th fret. That fret is easy for me to see on my archtop,Because some idiot put two fret marker dots on the 9th fret instead of the 12th!!! I can hold the chord using 1st, 2nd 3rd & 4th fingers. It's pretty easy actually, especially with .10's like I have on the archtop.
Members lauren Posted August 21, 2007 Author Members Posted August 21, 2007 I'm gonna keep practising.
