Smelly picks?

My mom bought me about 9 million of these:

And they smell really bad! After I use them, my fingers smell awful. Anyone else have this problem? Not necessarily with Hello Kitty picks, I guess, but maybe with any piece of gear?

In stark contrast, the rosewood insides of my Epi Masterbilt smell really good.

You been hitting the bottle again?

I'm a firm believer in black Fender mediums. I've been known to use other colors, but black sounds best...you think I'm nuts, right?

Nitroceluloid (or whatever the stuff is called) gives off a wierd smell when you play them vigorously. Other than that I hav'nt noticed any smelly picks around.

I did'nt notice the Fender logo at first.

Ellen, most likely those are nitrocelulose picks. Not only do they smell bad when played vigorously, they're also highly flammable.

I checked the Fender web page and it said that the "hello kitty" picks were made of PVC. My experience with pvc is that it can pickup chemical and biological smells. You might try storing them in baking soda for awhile and see if it neutralises the smell. Never had to deal with this problem myself. Good luck:wave:

I use Fender medium picks, right now, I have a bunch of The California ones, don't seem to smell, I would notice, my sinuses pick up anything. Good and bad, Hope you can get rid of the smell

Hello Kitty picks? Smelly? You're "O" for 2, Ellen. Seriously though, I'd do the trade JT mentions. Why is it that mothers lose all sense of judgement and good taste when buying something for their kids? Especially with daughters, it digresses to cute and cuddly - hence the picks. She had to have gotten a noseful of them when she bought them, right? Wait...I just had a thought...naw, not Ellen's mom.

Fender 'tortise shell' picks go up in flames in a REALLY COOL WAY when you put a match to them.

Try one of yours! (preferably outside, LOL!)

back in the day, when I was much younger and a lot less bright, i ripped one of my picks. I thought I could melt it back together if i put it over a candle...i learned a very valuable lesson that day. Picks and flame don't go together.

Wait...I just had a thought...naw, not Ellen's mom.

I showed my mom this thread and she stopped at Cripes's post and said "Well you just tell those guys I'm going to buy you a pink Hello Kitty acoustic guitar!!" "But mom, those picks really do smell kinda bad." "Well then just put them in baking soda like that guy said! There's some in the pantry!"

I'm always glad to have extra picks though. Especially with college coming up. I go through picks really quickly.

I think I'm going to pay a little more attention to my pick material from now on. These Hello Kitty picks kinda suck because not only are they smelly, they are not very durable. I've broken two and one is scratched on the side and catches on the strings, and I don't strum all that hard.

Ellen

P.S. My preferred variety of guitar pick is Dunlop Tortex (I like the green ones which are medium-heavyish and the red ones that are thin). They do not smell at all.

P.P.S. I'm going outside to burn a celluoid pick right now.

Smelly Cat, Smelly cat what are they feeding you?

Smelly Cat, smelly cat it's not your fault...

They won't take you to the vet.

You're obviously not their favorite pet.

You may not be a bed of roses,

And you're no friend to those with noses.

Smelly cat, smelly cat what are they feeding you?

Smelly cat, smelly cat it's not your fault!
