Members J L S Posted August 19, 2007 Members Posted August 19, 2007 I bought an acoustic guitar about 2 months ago because I wanted to learn fingerpicking style and I just like the sound of an acousic. Well, i found a couple of dvds teaching fingerstyle songs, one of the beatles and one of Bob Dylan. I started out learning some Dylan songs using Travis style Pcking and then went on to learn some of the Beatles stuff, ( Blackbird, Dear Prudence, Julia and a few others.) I got a pretty good handle on the Travis style and would like to find other songs I might be able to learn. Like some of Paul Simon's stuff and whatever. Can anybody suggest where I might find some of his and possibly others music instrucional dvds Or whatever. Remember, I've only been learning for about 2 1/2 or 3 months, Thanks for any suggestions or advice. Oh, I forgot to mention I've been playing electric guitar for a much longer time, on and off for about 35 yrs. Is this too dumb of a quetion to be responded to? Are there any online sites that teach songs?
Members drnihili Posted August 19, 2007 Members Posted August 19, 2007 Oh, I forgot to mention I've been playing electric guitar for a much longer time, on and off for about 35 yrs. I'm glad you mentioned this. Otherwise I'd have to hunt you down and kill you. There are lots of books devoted to particular genres and/or musicians. I know Mark Hanson has a book of Paul Simon stuff, you should be able to find it on Amazon. Also it's possible to find a lot of stuff on the net. Though many tab sites are down, ultimate-guitar is still around and has a lot of stuff. As for it being a dumb question, not at all. It gets asked a lot in various forms and generally gets a good response. However the more you can tell people about what you want, what genre of music, what style of instruction, the better response you'll get. I suspect someone will be along soon with a better answer.
Members J L S Posted August 20, 2007 Author Members Posted August 20, 2007 What I am actually looking for is DVDs teaching songs note for note. The Beatles dvd and the Dylan dvd teach this way, But, I havn't been able to find any other dvds teaching in the same mehod It's grelat way to learn IMO]P Im too. Impatiant to learn from books and tab. I guess Im just too slow to learn from tab and it seems that alot of the tabs are wrong, or Im just reading them wrong. I find the dvds much better. uh, did i already say that.
Members rhat Posted August 20, 2007 Members Posted August 20, 2007 learn your chords ,, and google the song name for chords and lyrics on the net. You may find some errors ,,, but typically they are so glaring its easy to figure out what chord belongs there .. . typically the error will be a chord that doesnt even belong in a song of that key signagure. You can prolly play 200 songs with just G C and D just start doing net searches ,,, and have at it. rat

Members Freeman Keller Posted August 20, 2007 Members Posted August 20, 2007 JLS - I am a great believer in the power of dvd/video instructions, and you can find almost any genre of acoutical instructions from Stefan Grossman and Homespun Tapes (google them). However, one of the very best for intermediate to advanced players is Mark Hanson's accent on music - get the fundimentals of Travis style down, then move on to his great transcriptions, including Paul Simon. Mark doesn't have a lot of video stuff, but his cds are great. http://www.accentonmusic.com/books.asp
Members Dave W. Posted August 20, 2007 Members Posted August 20, 2007 I am a big fan of Homespun and Stefan Grossman's Guitar Workshop DVD's. Lots to choose from, and many have demo clips you can listen to or download online.
Members J L S Posted August 23, 2007 Author Members Posted August 23, 2007 Thanks Freeman and Dave, that is exactly what I was looking for. Homespun and Stefan Grossman that is.
Members Queequeg Posted August 23, 2007 Members Posted August 23, 2007 Laurence Juber played guitar for McCartney & Wings. Great fingerstylist. Has a few books w/ CDs available. He does a killer instrumental version of Strawberry Fields; well, all the Beatles catalog, Christmas music, anything.
Members Bernie P. Posted August 23, 2007 Members Posted August 23, 2007 Homespun has a nice sale on now.Ends 9/4.
Members MattSkibaIsGOD Posted August 23, 2007 Members Posted August 23, 2007 I learn songs in my room. but usually from a book or Ultimate Guitar.
Members DaveAronow Posted August 28, 2007 Members Posted August 28, 2007 Try, some vinyl, a turn table, and your ears.
