Alternative Tunings?

Is anyone using the cut or partial capo in any of their songs? I've heard some mention using a full capo and getting some alternative tunings, but I have been picking around with some Celtic/Irish Folk Melodies and rhythms and the Kyser Cut Capo works even better great. I can get some really neat tunings while using a full capo and a cut capo together. The cut capo seems to be good, alone, only on the 2nd Fret, but you can put a full capo on the 1st Fret and the Cut Capo on the 3rd Fret, for instance; form the chords the way you usually do and see what voicings you get. It seems that you must always place the full capo and the cut capo 1 fret apart (i.e. 1st/3rd; 2nd/4th; 3rd/5th; etc.) or nothing sounds good.

I use one of those "drop D" things (I think it's a Kyser). It capo's everything except the low E, so if you use it at the second fret you've got a DADGBE tuning except a full step higher. I like it because you can do stuff with a D drone in the bass.

I use alternate tunings occasionally, mostly DADGAD and DADGBD. Most of the other ones seem to require you to dedicate a guitar, because you've got to adjust your string gauges to avoid having too little or too much tension on specific strings from a stock set.

I've thought about getting that capo that lets you capo or not capo each string individually: is that what you're using?

I've played around with using my Schubb on the 5 upper strings at the 2nd fret (drop D) and the 4th fret (drop E?). I've never actually played much of anything that way though.

Don K,

I didn't find a use for the drop D capo, at least after I found the partial or cut capo. The cut capo barres only strings 3,4,5 thus leaving the Low E and the B and High E string open. Of course if you use the cut capo on the 3rd Fret with a full capo on the first, things change a bit as the Low E now becomes an F and the B becomes a C and the High E becomes an F.

I got into the drop D capo because I play so much of Steve Stills' stuff, and he constantly plays in tuning with a D in the bass. You can mimic a lot of his stuff just by dropping the low E to D, same with some of Neil Young's stuff.

I might try out one of those capos that lets you adjust for each string separately. I wish I had the patience to mix two capos, but one throws me off enough. :D

BTW, what's the guitar in your avatar (I assume that's a pic of you)? Is that your Tak? The little bit showing looks like a Martin.
