Members drnihili Posted September 1, 2007 Members Posted September 1, 2007 Any idea where I could get some reasonably priced rosewood tuning buttons? My Walden has some nice looking plastic ones that I'd like to replace. And are buttons a fairly standard fit or do I need to take measurements and such?

Members drnihili Posted September 1, 2007 Author Members Posted September 1, 2007 I see ebony there, but not rosewood. I'd like something more toward the brownish red of rosewood.
Members mikeSF Posted September 2, 2007 Members Posted September 2, 2007 did you try luthier's mercantile? www.lmii.com even if you dont see it on stewmac's or lmii's site, ou still may want to drop em a line and see if they can get 'em for you. good luck. there was a link on here once for a company that makes knobs out of exotic woods - wonder if they also do tuner buttons.
Members Hudman Posted September 2, 2007 Members Posted September 2, 2007 drnihili,I found those at an internet store last year. Unfortunately, I can't remember which store had them. Keep searching. Someone has them.
Members drnihili Posted September 2, 2007 Author Members Posted September 2, 2007 Thanks, for the suggestions. near as I can tell, luthier's mercantile doesn't carry separate tuning buttons. I've been googling for them, but haven't come across a search with good results yet. Part of it seems to be that there isn't a standard name for the durn things.
Members Cripes Posted September 2, 2007 Members Posted September 2, 2007 This probably sounds nuts, but I thought about making my own. I have no doubt I can drill, ream and counterbore the proper hole dimensions. And I also thought how novel it would be to laminate various contrasting hardwoods and then carve each button with a different relief. I think I'll try it after I finish moving.
Members brahmz118 Posted September 2, 2007 Members Posted September 2, 2007 These aren't rosewood are they? They are pictured at LMI under Gotoh Replacement Buttons but I don't see them listed. The model number is GBSRK. If GBGBK = Gotoh Brand Grover-style Black, GBSRK = Gotoh Brand Schaller-style __? Rosewood? Koa? Really Kool? Maybe you can call them up for clarification.

Wow, those are some nice tuning buttons, there! I've always wondered how ivoroid buttons would look on my Larrivee. I tried these very buttons in ebony and they fit perfectly on the stock Ping tuners that came on my OM-03R. The only problem was that the real ebony was relatively soft so that after a couple of months of use (and a couple of string changes where I had to really crank the tuners) the inside of the button became stripped causing it to spin without engaging the tuning machine. I would think that rosewood would be even worse, so use caution when using one of those Planet Waves-type cranks. BTW - I'd love to see if there are imitation amber or tortoise shell buttons available somewhere. They'd probably look terrible on any of my guitars, but still I'd like to see what they'd look like. I've seen similar stuff on Paragon guitars and it always gives me guitar lust - which is what I call my financially-challenged form of GAS.

I was racking my brain trying to remember where I saw those. Good job!
Members mikeSF Posted September 2, 2007 Members Posted September 2, 2007 nice, those look like they might be Macassar Ebony.
Members DeepEnd Posted September 3, 2007 Members Posted September 3, 2007 I can find ebony buttons with no problem but no rosewood. The Grovers on my Ibanez are imitation amber like kwakatak mentioned and quite attractive IMHO. You might check out something similar, although I don't know where you'd find separate buttons. Never seen tortoise buttons though. Edit: Just for grins, you might want to look at these: http://cgi.ebay.com/Guitar-Part-Ebony-Tuner-Knob-w-MOP-Art-Inlay-28_W0QQitemZ180155711937QQihZ008QQcategoryZ22672QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem. Not what you were looking for but kinda cool. The guy has several designs for the inlays.
