Is there an XM channel that features a lot of fingerstyle music? I'm unfamiliar with many of the guitarists that have been mentioned here in various threads, and don't know where to hear their music.

There's an acoustic rock channel, 50. I only listen to it occasionally, but it's basically acoustic pop, with a fair number of lesser known artists. I tend to find it boring, which is why I don't listen to it. I would say that most of the players discussed here are on genre-specific channels on XM. I'd check out 12 (Americana), 14 (Bluegrass), 15 (Folk), and 72 (Blues, both acoustic and electric). Guys like Tommy Emmanuel pop up on 71 (smooth jazz) from time to time, but unless you like that genre as a whole, you'll probably get tired waiting to hear good acoustic guitar stuff. Top Tracks on 46 is billed as early classic rock, which is accurate. You probably won't hear anyone there you haven't heard already, but its a decent station.

We hear about this guitarist and that - all good but completely different in their own way - weve done many lists in the past - and i know it gets exspensive to buy individual cd's -- Getting cd's ith various artists from place like Solid Air records is one recommendation . They have some great DVD instructional stuff as well - you can sometimes find other sellers of their stuff alot cheaper than they sell it .

http://www.acousticmusicresource.com is a great sourse for Unusual CD's , i also suggest their Acoustic Guitar Highlights (volumes 3 ,4 and 5 are my personal favorites - at five bucks a piece thats a great deal ) but their all good - Thats where i learned about one of my favorites- Al Petteway

I'll check out the folk channel. Already listening to the blues, jazz, and most of the country channels, in addition to classical (I have XM on around 18 hrs/day). Never listen to cd's now except when I'm playing guitar. I'll have to start hunting around and see what's available.

Thx for the info.

If you're an XM subscriber, you can listen online at www.xmradio.com. One advantage to online is that with their player you can see whats on air on several channels at the same time and easily switch. It takes a few seconds to buffer the new channel but that isn't too much of a distraction if you have a broadband internet connection.

YouTube? I think you can search for topic-specific styles. I'm not sure. My boss is attempting to learn fingerstyle and he mentioned to me that there are many tutorials that are geared toward the novice so I would imagine you could peruse for anything you are looking for from beginner to advanced and in all styles. I really can't confirm that. The only time I go there is when a forum member posts a link here.

Another thumbs up for CD Baby, but I still discover a lot of new artist/music by happenstance. Krash, checkout monthly artist/CD reviews in Acoustic Guitar magazine. NPR does an adequate job of highlighting establish and up-and-coming fingerstyle/guitarist. Click on H.C. and A.G. members respective Myspace, Websites, and YouTube links. We have some accomplished guitarist on these boards; they're all so modest they never toot their own "horn". As you mentioned, this is also a great place to discover new/"old" stuff too.

The only draw back about CD Baby, it can be a bit time consuming wading through the upteem selections even when you've narrowed your focus to the particular music you're interested in. I recently wrote CD Babe and asked had they ever considered creating an Internet radio network playing the music of the artist Cd's they sale? Unfortunately it's kinda of a hit and miss type of deal now. I've lucked up on some amazing fingerstyle stuff, but I'm sure I've missed out on some fine guitarist/music too.

Channel 12 is one of my favorites (Americana). My dad has XM in his car. Great stuff! A lot more commercials now than there used to be.

?????

I listen to Cross Country (12) regularly - there are no commercials. That's the whole point of XM.

Been listening to XM 15 (folk) - some good songs, some bad songs, some old songs, some talk (too much talk), but a lot of fine acoustic playing, in various styles. Added it to my presets.

Can't do Youtube or XM online - using a slow dialup.

Some interesting info on the NPR site. They have a channel on Sirius, but not XM.

I just dropped my subscription to Bass Player, and picked up Guitar Player. If I have time to read another mag (I subscribe to 6 now), I'll take a look at Acoustic Guitar. I've been playing more acoustic and less electric & bass lately, and since I regained the ability to fingerpick, I'm spending a lot more time working on fingerstyle.

NPR broadcasts Prairie Home Companion. That's a stitch. They do play some good stuff, though. I pick up NPR locally on 90.7 FM.

I can't stress fingerstyle enough to people who have the desire to learn but won't, don't put down the flatpick long enough to make an honest effort. It doesn't cost anything and I don't care who champions the use of flatpick, fingerstyle cannot be surpassed for the sheer weight of it's possibilities alone.

XM also carries programming from some Clear Channel commerical stations, those do have commercials...channel 11, 21, 22, 24, 161 and 173.

If I remember right, 11 was formerly XM's Nashville channel, which was very good. Haven't listened to it since it went commercial.
