Members oggy Posted September 5, 2007 Members Posted September 5, 2007 Friend of mine has a guitar, knows nothing about it, thought I'd see if any of ya'lls could tell me anything about the builder. The headstock is labeled LYS as is the sticker on the inside. Model L-5. Made in Canada. Top appears to be solid ceadar with laminate sides and back. Has a pickup of some kind with the output on the lower strap button. Fret markers are two dots on the odd frets with three on the twelfth. Doing a google search lead me to some info about it being an early Godin and somthing about a fire...? Any info about the maker or the model would be sweet. Thanks.
Members bigou Posted September 5, 2007 Members Posted September 5, 2007 First of all visit this site :http://pages.videotron.com/zguit/histoire/histoire.htmIt's in french but it talks about the history of Norman guitars. Lys guitar was developped by Robert Godin and Claude Boucher (son of Normand Boucher the creator of Norman guitars). At the same time they creat the Kamouraska classical guitar to (I own one) Lys was pre-Seagull guitar. Claude Boucher leaves the company and Godin start Seagull guitars after that. Claude Boucher now makes guitars under the name of Boucher. They are high end guitars. Here's the info I got from a guy name Kostas on another forum... he knows a lot about LYS guitars: To the best of my knowledge, the L was all laminated. The model line up was L, L2, L3, L5, L10, L15, L18, L18CW, L20 (only some years) and L25. I think the solid tops start with the L2 or L3, and the early L5s were also solidmaple back and sides, but later, they were laminated maple back and sides. The lowest model that was guaranteed to be all solid woods was the L10(Cedar top, Mahogany back and sides). The L15 was solid Spruce top, backand sides). The L18 (and the L18CW, which is the same guitar but with acutaway) was solid spruce with Walnut back and sides. The L20, which seemsto have been made only in the early years, was solid Spruce top over solidMaple back and sides, and the L25 was top of the line, with a solid Sprucetop, and solid East Indian Rosewood back and sides. Welcome to the world of Quebec guitar making!!!!
