What do you think? I have never seen or played it. I bought it online today from a California dealer for $1204.00 in the original hard case.

That's a great price for a great guitar. Many people say that the "real" Martin's start with the OM-21. Like a "poor man's" OM-28. I've played some really fine OM-21's.

I discussed the 21 and 28 with the dealer. He told me the 28 was a heavier built guitar than the 21. The 21 is thinner and lighter more senistive. It has to be played softer like and electric to get the best out of it as compared to the heavier guitar that needs to be played a bit harder. They are not supposed to be the same. The little extra's we see on the 28 are just part of what makes it the 28. The 21 is for a player who wants a lighter softer action guitar to play. Personally I like the idea of having a simple yet elegant great sounding and playing guitar. Its going to be a nice change for me. I hope I like it as much as the rest of the 21 owners out there. The dealer assured me I would and that if I didn't he would take it back and refund the payment no questions asked. He's a good dealer and seems to be one hell of a nice man. Its LA Guitars out of California. The owner is Ted.

Well that's certainly uplifting. I just hope and I'm confident the guitar has the great Martin sound and playability. Thanks for the huge vote of confidence.......

On Gbase the price range is from $1775 (used) to $2799 for a "vintage finish" version.

You did good.

I've got an 000 rosewood Martin with a spruce top, it's really a great sound.

Take good care of it.

I frickin' hate OM-21's. Total P.O.S.

:D

For quite a while I was looking to pick one up based soley on reviews but I could not find one anywhere within 250 miles of me, new or otherwise. I still haven't seen or played one.

Couple stores offered to bring one in but there was (refundable) deposit issues and I thought that was a pretty arrogant method of exposing a potential customer to a sale.

I have had my OM-21 for 2 years and really love it. I paid $1250 new from a dealer who was going out of business. Because of the article this month in AG about DADGAD tuning I currently have it in that. I was just noodling around with it last night and marveling about the tone and sustain. I have 011 DR Sunbeams (round core strings) on it, and it really sings as though the notes will last forever. I usually have 12s on it, but have not been playing much lately so I went down to 11s to help the fingers. As long as you can live without the bling I think you will be more than happy. I really prefer a simple guitar. Good luck with yours.

I'm not totally sure why he says that. It is my understanding that all OM's in the standard series are 1/4" scalloped (the OM-28V is not, I believe), and they are all long scale. I've always felt that the big difference between the 21 and standard 28 was simply finish and bling - and every 21 I've ever played has been a stunning little fingerstyle guitar. I think you are going to be very happy with it.

You have quite an instrument there. There's an OM-21 at the local shop in Frederick that I visit on my lunchbreaks. I can't get enough of playing that guitar. It is one of the finest acoustics I've ever played, and I'd honestly take it over the much more famous 000-28EC.

Mine is an 000-28EC and I really like it a lot, but sizewise and soundwise they're really close, the 28 has a shorter (24.9" vs 25.4") scale. The nut width is the same at 1 3/4". Mine has an ebony fingerboard which I really like. The rest is decoration, but there's nothing wrong with a little decoration.

I got mine for $2,100 new about four years ago and I'm VERY happy with it.

I typically use Elexer 12's Nanowebs. I may try the Cleartones on this guitar. Any opinions or experience with the Cleartones?

That's a good price. I don't mean to slight the EC guitar, because I've played a few that were absolutely phenomenal.

But that OM-21 has copious amounts of mojo. Some guitars just have the right wood, braced and built by the right people on the right day. There's a Collings dread in the same store that is great, but IMO the -21 smokes it. It's one of those rare instruments endowed with "it."

And since the EC's are probably built with more care, I imagine you're more likely to have an "it" instrument, as well. :thu: I do admit that the shorter scale is tempting...but the most I'll be able to afford in the immediate future is a lowly -15 Series.

That might be an extra special OM-21, just by chance. Any chance you could squeeze it in your budget? Sounds like a guitar you really covet, and it might haunt your future. ;)

No worries, just thought I'd mention the similarities.

Mine sounds so good that when my current teacher heard it (not me :D ) he went out and bought himself a similar (not EC) 000-28.

It really is nicely built. I'm not even that big of a Clapton fan, but this is one sweet guitar.

I wanted to get a rosewood Martin before the rosewood runs out. The prices are starting to go crazy . . .

Always like the Elixir Nano's but they break on my Martin so I've tried the Cleartones. Still in the 'getting to know each other' stage of the relationship but so far I wouldn't kick them out of bed. I think I still prefer the Elixir's if they wouldn't break.
