Members Luigi Posted September 10, 2007 Members Posted September 10, 2007 I picked up a Dixon 5 string secondhand , and I'm hoping there are some websites for good basic instruction. I'd like to learn it correctly instead of my usual "self-taught" method. Anyone ?
Members dhoenisch Posted September 10, 2007 Members Posted September 10, 2007 Rat 'chere. Musician's Friend has an instructional DVD that I started with, but I found out that I was the type of person that needed an instructor. Actually, if I can find the DVD, and if you want it, you can just pay for shipping and packaging costs, and you can have it. It's been sitting somewhere unused for over two years. Plus, as much as I don't care for them, you can go to www.banjohangout.org. Someone there can give you a hand. They are very nit-picky there, so any little slip-up on one of your posts, and they'll be all over you like white on rice. Needless to say, I don't post on there. Anyhow, keep on pickin' Dan My favorite banjo players joke: What do you call 12 banjo players standing in a row? A full set of teeth.
Members Luigi Posted September 10, 2007 Author Members Posted September 10, 2007 Thank you Dan. I'll check them out. If I think I might need the DVD, I'll give you a shout. Hopefully, I can play this thing with a bit of help.
Members dhoenisch Posted September 10, 2007 Members Posted September 10, 2007 Oh, actually, this is the book you'll want to buy. It's often called the banjo players bible. It's written by Earl Scruggs himself, and he has instructions on how to play the banjo, plus, it has an instructional CD. Definately worth the money. http://www.amazon.com/Earl-Scruggs-5-String-Banjo-Enhanced/dp/0634060422/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-4719141-0811028?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1189460851&sr=8-1 Dan

I'd like to learn it correctly instead of my usual "self-taught" method. Anyone ? By correctly, I would guess that you mean similar to banjo music that you enjoy. I bought my first banjo from a guy who played clawhammer exclusively, and only learned later that Scruggs style was very different. I think your musical preferences should guide you when you look at instructional material. I initially enjoyed hearing classical pieces on the banjo, so I purchased Bach transcriptions from John Bullard's website. I think a lot of people are familiar with fast-and-furious banjo playing (i.e., Beverly Hillbillies, Dueling Banjos). For some really nice clawhammer playing, check out some soundclips here: http://www.zeppmusic.com/MP3/
Members Jessz1 Posted September 11, 2007 Members Posted September 11, 2007 Check out the banjo hangout www.banjohangout.org The scruggs book is good also. Has most of the bluegrass techniques covered.
Members D18RB100 Posted September 13, 2007 Members Posted September 13, 2007 There's also a book called "The Multi-Instrumental Guitarist." It's very helpful whether you're learning banjo, mandolin, etc. Nice Star Trek avatar. Is that a scene from "The Corbomite Maneuver?" Nate
