Members Blackener Posted September 22, 2007 Members Posted September 22, 2007 I have this Silvertone 12 string that has been sitting in my basement for the past 5 years collecting dust. Well im interested in getting rid of it but I have no idea what it is worth. I did some searching and i think it is a 1969 and was sold at sears. It has some chips in the binding and a weird mark on the back of the neck but other than that it is in pretty good condition. What do you guys think i could sell it for? Does anyone have any other info or links about it?
Members Terry Allan Hall Posted September 22, 2007 Members Posted September 22, 2007 Built by Harmony of Chicago...not a collector's axe, but (possibly) a nice beater. Value is somewhere between $60 and $125, depending on actual condition (particularily depends on whether the neck needs a reset and/or what condition the bridge and face is in). Pretty cool!
Members Blackener Posted September 22, 2007 Author Members Posted September 22, 2007 Thanks for the reply. I was thinking it was worth something like that. Structurally it is really sound, only has the cosmetic issues, played good when it had the strings on it. One more question do you know if it is solid wood or plywood and maybe what kind of wood?

Solid spruce top, most likely solid birch back/sides...not the finest grade, of course, but the Chicago Harmony guitars, etc. rarely were plywood.
Members Krash Posted September 22, 2007 Members Posted September 22, 2007 Looks like a Silvertone S1225. Some info here.
Members dhoenisch Posted September 23, 2007 Members Posted September 23, 2007 If that's the case, than it's solid birch all around. That guitar is worth you packing it in a box and sending it off to me for some TLC Dan
Members guitarist21 Posted September 23, 2007 Members Posted September 23, 2007 I'm going to go with birch all around too. The top pic is a little hard to see but from what I can tell it doesn't really look like spruce. And Terry's right- Harmony made some great guitars in Chicago that are generally under-valued today. Given the right care, that could be a great beater for someone. Ellen
Members Terry Allan Hall Posted September 23, 2007 Members Posted September 23, 2007 Strung heavy and tuned down to C-F-Bb-Eb-G-C, you might get pretty close to Huddy "Leadbelly" Ledbetter's vibe...he played a VERY similar instrument, a Stella. Harmony bought out the folks who made Stella guitars and added the Stella line to their own...yours is a somewhat more modern version of his! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leadbelly http://leadbelly.lanl.gov/leadbelly.html If it was mine, I think I'd hang onto it, at least until it's monetary value caught up to it's actual value!

Members Blackener Posted September 24, 2007 Author Members Posted September 24, 2007 After reading your guys posts I'm thinking about holding on to it. Ive never heard it with good strings so I think I'll string it up and then make up my mind. Thanks for all the info.
