Members 12Gauge Posted September 23, 2007 Members Posted September 23, 2007 I remember a few years ago, I played in a band with a lefty guitar player. He always used to play right handed but the reason he played left is because he got his left hand finger tips crushed in a printing press. He could still hold a pick so after he was healed up he took his guitar and restrung it for playing left. After a time he was doing pretty good. The only trouble he really had was strumming a really fast song but otherwise did really well. I can't imagine how hard it would be too teach your brain to play left when you are a right hand player. If you get the chance, pick up a lefty guitar and see what it's like. I guess if the determination is there it could be done. He did it.
Members Cripes Posted September 23, 2007 Members Posted September 23, 2007 When I started years ago my buddy could not find a lefty guitar so he learned to play as righty. Now, beings how that was the first time he picked up the guitar you might say it just didn't matter because, well, he learned and it didn't seem any more cumbersome to him than it was me. It's a mind -over-muscle thing and after a while it clicks.
Members eflat Posted September 23, 2007 Members Posted September 23, 2007 When I first picked up a guitar it felt the wrong way round to me. Playing air guitar etc I would always play lefty, but my first guitar was a right-handed, and as it was a present I decided not to take it back to exchange it. Glad I didnt when you look at the availability and price of left-handed models. I do a few things left-handed, [play pool, dig, golf etc], I think it depends on how you first do something. If its a fairly unique action, such as the above examples, your brain isn't pre-set for doing them, so it doesn't matter as much. Playing guitar right handed then switching must be a lot more difficult, so kudos to your friend, 12gauge.
Members Tony Burns Posted September 23, 2007 Members Posted September 23, 2007 Their a singer song writer named Bill Staines whom ive been a fan of for years , who plays lefty on a righty guitar . Ive tried to turn the guitar and play it with the other hand , but its like learning how to walk again - i gave up on it very quickly and am grateful i dont have to learn over again .
Members OldGuitarPlayer Posted September 23, 2007 Members Posted September 23, 2007 Jimi Hendrix was actually "right handed" while handwriting. Apparently he was "ambidextrous" (spelling?) Glen Cambell is apparently "left handed" yet plays guitar "right handed"...go figure OGP
