$100 is a very steep price to shape a saddle. Check out Bob Colosi's prices here: http://www.guitarsaddles.com/pricing.asp. His custom saddles cost half as much as your guy was going to make you pay.

Check out this link: http://www.frets.com/FRETSPages/Musician/Guitar/Setup/MakeNewSaddle/newsaddle01.html and also Freeman Keller's "Is My Guitar Sick?" sticky at the top of the HCAG page for help shaping your saddle. I made a new saddle myself not too long ago (I was so excited, I made a whole thread about it: http://acapella.harmony-central.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1683113). If I can do it, anyone can. :D

Good luck!

Ellen is right on - a bone blank is five bucks or so, a shaped one from Colosi is maybe 20. All you have to do with his is sand down the bottom until the action is right. A repair guy who has worked on my marties charges 80 for a setup - bone nut and saddle, truss rod, bridge slotting - the whole shebang. You're getting ripped, my friend.

I would look at it as an opportunity not a negative. My local shop charges $10 for a compensated tusq saddle; I'd sure take one for free.
