Humidifiers...

So, I've been playing acoustic and electric for about 6 years now, and it occurred to me that I have no idea what a humidifier does. Well, obviously it humidifies, but why? Wouldn't the guitar being humid warp it or something? What does a humidifier prevent?

Humidity at either extreme - too dry or too humid - can affect a guitar in many ways. If it's too dry, the top can warp or split, fret ends stick out and interfere with playing, and, in extreme cases can cause braces to lift. Not a good thing. Excessive humidity can be just as damaging in its own way; glue softens, tops warp, braces shift. Optimum humidity is between 45-55%. Humidification is necessary for must of us, at least in the winter, because of hot air heating. (Not a bad idea for humans, either). Here in Colorado, I've already seen readings of 15% RH, and it's only October. If you live in Louisiana or Florida or Gulf Coast Texas, you probably don't need humidification - in fact, DEhumidification is probably in order for much of the year.

Bottom line - if you value your axe, you'll take some proactive measures regarding humidity.
