after seeing a previous thread on getting a rogue 6 string- a person mentioned that the rogue 12 string was a great deal.... well i went and looked and now i have tentative GAS on this unit...

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Rogue-Herringbone-12String-Acoustic?sku=519267

now i know it's a MIC lower quality guitar- but the vast majority of the reviews are very positive- and how can they sell that for such a low price?

now i don't really play well at all- but enjoy just plinking around- at his price how can a person go wrong? i mean i can have my dad help on setting it up if it needs it.. throw on some lighter strings- drop the tuning etc...

or should i not even entertin the idea until i can actually play the 6 string i have? 8^)

sheesh you people... (just kidding of course...)

Ah, yes, a 12 string. Double your fun, double your frustration. Gotta have one in your quiver for sure.

But as my wife says about mine, "he spends half his time tuning it and half his time playing out of tune"

One thing I'd be cautious about is that at 12-string involves a lot more string tension, and I'd thus be a bit more nervous about the construction on a $100 12-string than I would on a comparable 6-string. That guitar does LOOK nice, though.

as many reviewers have mentioned, i would plan on swapping the strings for a set of 9's or 10's- then possibly tune it down a half or full step. i also use open e- tuning- so that is naother increase o nthe tension- so maybe i'll go to open d or g and capo up?

it's gettin hard to fight this off- i just may order it this afternoon... yikes!

my thoughts parallel Don's. When you get it measure the neck angle and action carefully. If they are not within yours (or your Dad's) standards send it back while you can. If it is, join the club.

FWIW - both my 12's are strung with lights (10-47). One is tuned to standard but two steps down, the other right now is in open G but also two steps down (I guess that is open F).

Report back to the Mothership when it arrives - we need a review and pictures

Music 123 is offering the same Rogue 12 string and you can get a 20.00 instant rebate if you spend 100.00. Just add something for.01 or more and you get the discount. I don't know if you get the free shipping still, but last night when I was checking on a beater I added some picks and the price went down to about 82.00 and shipping was 3 cents. Otto

For the first few years I was playing it was all 12 string. I had 6 string guitars but the sound of a 12 made me think 6 strings just sounded impoverished by contrast. Then, after many years not playing at all I decided to come back slowly and started with 6 strings. I'm still there but I would caution you, as others have, that 12 string guitars need to be good quality makes. My take on it is that a 12 string has to be purpose-built instrument that embodies more than just additional tuners, nut slots and bridge pin holes. That might be painfully obvious but some makers stop there and that's why they're inexpensive (read as cheap).

oh- trust me i am fully expecting a cheap instrument, no illusions of grandeur here.

a plywood body- might dull the tone but it's a bit more stable and "knock around"

the tuners- given that the guitar itself cost's less than a good set of tuners- I'll just have to see how bad they might be- but considering that old wooden peg's used to be the standard i am hoping for the best

and the tension factor with all those strings- i fully expect to tune to an open D or G and use light gauge strings, this should help with the self destruction that will invariably occur. 8^)

then why bother you ask? well i guess it's 50% curiosity to see how cheap it really is, and 50% just wanting to give it a try. if it's so bad i can't stand it then I'll return it and have learned my lesson. if not then maybe these will become the old stella's, kay's and harmony's of this generation...

I've often wondered if these cheap 12-string guitars had the heavier bracing and whatnot. I purchased a Carlo Robelli 12-string at Sam Ash last year for $99, and when I picked it up, it was noticeably heavier. On looking at the bracing, it was definately thicker pieces of wood. I couldn't see the bridge plate, but I would assume it'd be a little thicker due to the extra pull of the strings. The only thing on mine I could see doing in the future is to reglue the bridge with hot hide glue. The first 12-string I bought home, one week later, the bridge started to lift. They had appearantly glued the bridge directly on the finish. So far, on the second one, the bridge is still solidly glued on, but I think on my next string change, since I want to fashion a bone saddle for it anyhow, I may remove the bridge, scrape the area under the bridge of all the finish, and glue it on, just so it won't pop off on me the next time I play it (usually at church while leading singing).

Oh, I guess I said all of this to wonder if Rogue and Carlo Robelli instruments are manufactured at the same plant. I am always happy with both company's instruments. Quality seems to be the same with both.
