Members Simon76 Posted October 11, 2007 Members Posted October 11, 2007 OK so here's the deal, next year I turn 50 and I want to get a special guitar for my birthday.I want an 08 model cause thats the year I turn 50.In my younger days I never thought I'd live this long.I want a Gibson Songwriter Deluxe Cutaway. But I want to special order one without electronics. So it won't have the barn door cut in it. After I get it I'll add a few touches. They come with a bone nut and tusk saddleso I want to upgrade those to something cool likefossilized walerus or mamoth and add brass pins.I'll go with a Baggs pup probably an I-beamso it should match using a Baggs Padi nicely. Now, here's the rub,my local Gibson dealer is very proud of all their guitars. They think they are donig you a favor by allowing you to purchase at 10% off full retail. The thought of 20% off retail, envokes tales of overhead, loosing their homes and medical expenses. I need to find a Gibson dealer that is easy to work within special ordering a non electric SWDC.List price on a SWDC is $3053 USD.30% off is $2137 USD.40% off is $1831 USD. Without electronics one would think it would be cheaper, but being a special order it might cost even more. Any past experiences with Gibson special ordersor suggestions on dealers to use? What would you expect to pay for it? I am really sold on getting a SWDC,IMHO they are the most visually stunning with an outstanding tone for the money.

Members bjorn-fjord Posted October 11, 2007 Members Posted October 11, 2007 Do not use production models as a guide for what you think a custom order will cost. Gibson is very busy. They have a hard time keeping their dealers stocked as it is. Also, there is no way in hell any dealer is going to discount a special order instrument. I would not be at all suprised if the instrument you seek would cost in excess of $4000. But what the hell, treat yourself. You're living on borrowed time anyway!
Members missedmyexit Posted October 11, 2007 Members Posted October 11, 2007 It would help if you told us what state your porch and dog are located in.
Members Simon76 Posted October 11, 2007 Author Members Posted October 11, 2007 There has to be shops willing to make $300 for less then an hour of paperwork. If a shop has a $1500 cost and they make $300 on it, thats a 20% return on the investment. Thats a pretty good deal. And if they do the setup they will make even more. I'm certainly willing to use just about any decent shop in the lower 48 states and have it shipped.
Members bransonb Posted October 11, 2007 Members Posted October 11, 2007 I hear what you're saying and hopefully it really is as simple as that. If my local dealer wasn't playing ball I think I'd go to the Gibson web site for their list of 5 star dealers and go one by one. Mandolin Brothers? Fullers? The one that's geographically closest? I'd be interested in how it goes. Please post your experiences.
