Members miken Posted October 12, 2007 Members Posted October 12, 2007 I'm looking at the dramatic price drop for the Babicz Identity Series guitars at both MFriend and Music123. They're both selling them for $499. My recollection is that they were much higher before. Babicz going out?
Members guitarman Posted October 12, 2007 Members Posted October 12, 2007 That's an interesting guitar. Having the strings integrated throughout the left radius of the guitar probably gives it an increased fullness and a resonance but I havn't played one and I'm afraid I may rub my strumming arm on the extended strings. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Babicz-Identity-Series-Jumbo-Acoustic-Guitar?sku=511832

So, you may be mistaking this series with his solid-wood upper end models which are, of course, significantly higher.
Members Hudman Posted October 12, 2007 Members Posted October 12, 2007 That's a great price for a solid wood guitar. I'm not sure about the adjustable neck and the spread out string mounting points on the body. I never played one before.
Members Tony Burns Posted October 12, 2007 Members Posted October 12, 2007 I played one about 5-6 months ago in Jamestown New york - i did not think they were very well made guitars -I was not impressed at all !
Members Cripes Posted October 12, 2007 Members Posted October 12, 2007 I have looked at them but never played one. It looks gimmicky. McPherson also employs the use of an adjustable neck but their design isolates the neck from the soundboard. That does free up the upper bout soundboard to resonate without the damping effect of the neck. But, if they made an identical guitar soundbox with the neck conventionally attached then I might be able to tell if the detached neck produces a better sounding guitar. Without that sort of (empirical) test I can only assume it does. Babicz, with their fanned out strings, I consider no different in that regard.
Members guitarist21 Posted October 12, 2007 Members Posted October 12, 2007 I have looked at them but never played one. It looks gimmicky. I've played one and my conclusion was that it is a little gimmicky. It wasn't any better than a similarly priced guitar and it was remarkably heavy, which bothered me a little. It wasn't a bad guitar, but I certainly think you can do better for your $$. Ellen

Members Chicken Posted October 13, 2007 Members Posted October 13, 2007 I have one of the Dread Identity in Rosewood. The good...It's all solid woods. The rosewood back looks fantastic, much nicer than my rosewood back Yamaha. The adjustable neck is unlike any other guitar I have, and makes it easy to adjust the action.Fit and finish are great.I won it on Ebay for a song from Babicz (pretty sure they won't ebay more). The bad...It lacks bass, and I prefer playing my $450 low-end Martin over it.It lacks bass, and I prefer playing my $300 low-end Yamahas over it.It seems a tad heavy (probably due to the neck mechanics) and somewhat unbalanced. The spider string pattern could get in the way of sleeves. To be honest, I haven't really played it that that much. My first impression was that it lacked so much bass that it just do anything for me. The last time I played it, I liked it more. I bid really low and didn't expect to win it. For the price I paid, it was certainly worth it, but I wouldn't pay $1,300 or whatever the "list price" is.
