Members the dixie dredg Posted October 11, 2007 Members Posted October 11, 2007 i want a smaller guitar with characterfor one i want a smaller guitar just for comfort/size issues (it feels like i barely have room to spick up my dreadnaught in my tiny dorm room), and i also just want a more projecting, distinctive sound. warm, as much bass as possible with a smaller body, basically i dont want to sound like another joe trummer.what sucks is im stuck in a dorm and am poor--so i cant try anything out and have to buy in the cheaper side online. i'd like to keep it below 500 if possible, and i'd be more comfortable with 300.so....anyone know some good smaller size guitars?
Members MePeel Posted October 11, 2007 Members Posted October 11, 2007 I've got a Morgan Monroe 00-32. It's small, but deep bodied, so it has good projection. You can get it online for about $350, including case+shipping. Mel
Members the dixie dredg Posted October 11, 2007 Author Members Posted October 11, 2007 awesome, i saw some on ebay for exactly that price...and it looks hot as well. keep the suggestions coming! (but it might be hard to beat the morgan monroe) I've got a Morgan Monroe 00-32. It's small, but deep bodied, so it has good projection. You can get it online for about $350, including case+shipping. Members the dixie dredg Posted October 11, 2007 Author Members Posted October 11, 2007 edit: what is the difference between 00 and parlor? which is smaller?
Members denvertrakker Posted October 11, 2007 Members Posted October 11, 2007 edit: what is the difference between 00 and parlor? which is smaller? Those classifications are a bit indistinct, but generally, a parlor is smaller than an 00 (and has a different shape). Having said that, there are larger parlors and smaller 00s - 00 in particular being a Martin-specific designation. My Cort Grand Concert is about the size of an 00, and larger than most parlors.
Members Cripes Posted October 11, 2007 Members Posted October 11, 2007 A concert size sounds like it would fill your needs. I have one and it projects very well. I can't offer up any brand because I'm not familiar with your $$ range offerings. In a dorm room? Get a cheap one for sure. Never know who'll kabong you with it for keeping them up before finals.

Members T.B. Posted October 11, 2007 Members Posted October 11, 2007 Cort Earth 900 - If you can get past the bling, it's a good bang for you buck git. Solid top (Cedar) - ( Mahogany) solid sides & back. Bought mine from Dr. Clucks 3 1/2 years ago, good people. Cort's Official Website. http://www.cort.co.kr/english/products/acoustics/view.asp?product_id=32 Dr. Clucks Music Emporium - Online Warehouse. http://www.drclucks.net/fusemain.cfm?section=search Trina P.S. Here's the site for Cort US dealer locator. http://www.cortguitar.com/dealers/index.html
Members Treborklow Posted October 11, 2007 Members Posted October 11, 2007 Yes the Earth 900 is a nice guitar, but I found the neck to be quite wide for me. Cort makes a 000 size that's can be nice. Cheap too.
Members the dixie dredg Posted October 12, 2007 Author Members Posted October 12, 2007 hm. ive looked at the suggestions, done some research, and decided i want to go even smaller, to a parlor size. apparently i shouldnt expect nearly as much volume/bass from this, but some are better than others...what do you guys think about the art and lutherie ami? i love how quirky it looks first of all, and if i could fin the blue burst one anywhere on line, i would have bought it already. edit: spelling
Members denvertrakker Posted October 12, 2007 Members Posted October 12, 2007 what do you guys think about the art and lutherie ami? I'd buy one in a heartbeat. But that's just me.
Members knowspicker Posted October 12, 2007 Members Posted October 12, 2007 I have an Art & Lutherie Ami Cedar and I love it. I play it all the time now and kind of let my Seagull S6 sit in it's case. It plays great and sounds like a real guitar but there is not that much base. I love warm so it took a little while to get used to the sound. But now I like it just fine. My wishing for guitar is a 00-15 and my "I really think it might be just a little better if I wan't to stay in my price range" is the Art & Lutherie [or Seagull, or Norman, or S&P] is Folk. But! I can't really justify buying one of the Folks when I like the Ami as much as I do. Plus, there is something about the ami that just feels right. Bonus, Flight of the Concords has a very similar guitar featured. Overall, if you are thinking about an A&L Ami I would say play one if you can. They are great little guitars. On a side note: My wife loves the sound and doesn't even notice the difference between the Ami and the S6 unless I point it out. My guitar player buddy likes the S6 because there is more base. The Ami is not as loud as a dread but pretty loud and just right for singing and playing. I've got the blue one and love it so I am biased. But I don't think you will be disapointed and the it's a real bargain since it also includes a gig bag and a truss wrench. If you want warm you definitely want the Cedar top. The Spruce and laminate are nowhere near as warm.

Members the dixie dredg Posted October 12, 2007 Author Members Posted October 12, 2007 yay! i want the blue as well--where did you guys get it? any online places i can order? edit: yea i know everyone says try it out at a store, but im not really in a position to at all cause im stuck in a dorm most of the year
Members otter06 Posted October 12, 2007 Members Posted October 12, 2007 Sorry, I don't know where to order it. I got mine used on Craigslist. The black one Broadus linked to looks pretty nice.

Members flip333 Posted October 12, 2007 Members Posted October 12, 2007 000 seems small enough to me. Parlors are fine though. To each their own.
Members Treborklow Posted October 12, 2007 Members Posted October 12, 2007 A really nice smaller 000 size guitar just ended on ebay today. It was a Epiphone PR600 and it sold for under $250. Those 70's Japan ones are really nice sounding guitars and pretty cheap.
Members Freeman Keller Posted October 12, 2007 Members Posted October 12, 2007 000 seems small enough to me. Parlors are fine though. To each their own. The triple ought is my main player and seems to be both loud enough and definitely has enough bass, but I'm going to build a true parlor this fall. I may end up giving it to my daughter - we'll see.

I'm very pleased with it. Has great tone and volume for the size, but you can't bang out a loud tune. Well you can, but it will be "jangly". I agree on the ami color, I like the blue (I'm only going on internet pictures). Scott O
Members knowspicker Posted October 12, 2007 Members Posted October 12, 2007 I got my Ami at Long and McQuade up in Vancouver BC. You can probably get one from someplace like eldery but they may need to order it which could take a while. Tom Lee or Long and McQuade might be able to ship you one they do seem to carry a good selection but you would have to call them on the phone as they don't list prices on the websites.
Members camelface Posted October 17, 2007 Members Posted October 17, 2007 what is the difference in size and sonically between for example, Martins 00-15, 000-15 and J-15? All are smaller than dread with some curves, and all hog, I'm interested in getting one of these babies. The reason I ask is there is a 000-15 I could get locally but these guitars only have 12 accessible frets (thumbs down).

They are all here http://www.thepodium.com/t-soundsamples.aspx and two here http://www.maurysmusic.com/martin_guitar_video_clips Personally I'm a big fan of twelve fretters (and slots) - I'd add a 000-15S to my quiver in a heartbeat.
Members Queequeg Posted October 17, 2007 Members Posted October 17, 2007 The reason I ask is there is a 000-15 I could get locally but these guitars only have 12 accessible frets (thumbs down). It's funny, but I have this cockamamie theory that I couldn't prove in 1000 years that collectively, folks who play 12-fretters are more likely to play up the neck than collectively, those who play 14-fretters. This is based only on my casual observation that virtually everyone I know who plays a slothead 12-fret plays it clear up to the octave or above. Those who only play up to the 5th fret seem to by-and-large prefer 14ers.But I must add, lest I get BBQed here...yes, certainly I know plenty of guys who play clear up to 12, 15 and beyond who play 14ers, too. All this clearly goes against conventional wisdom, but in my own defense, I have seldom been accused of too much wisdom. If you're mulling this over and asking yourself what the H is the matter with Q? remember to include classical guitarists in your analysis. but to answer your question, the body of the 000-15s reaches up to the 12th fret (as opposed to the neck plunging down into the body) so the upper bout is elongated (read: larger) and the bridge is situated in the center of the lower bout so you get more bass and more volume. I owned a 00-15 and a 000-15s @ the same time. So I sold the 00-15 due to big difference in sound (and slope-shouldered slothead mojo, of course). And obviously, a 000 is larger than a 00.
Members drnihili Posted October 17, 2007 Members Posted October 17, 2007 It's funny, but I have this cockamamie theory that I couldn't prove in 1000 years that collectively, folks who play 12-fretters are more likely to play up the neck than collectively, those who play 14-fretters. Those who only play up to the 5th fret seem to by-and-large prefer 14ers. But I must add, lest I get BBQed here... Perhaps this could be explained by the difference in tension. 14 fretters will tend to have longer scale lengths and hence less tension. This lower tension will be more noticeable when fretting in the first five frets. Thus people who play in that range will prefer 14 fret guitars more than will people who play up the neck. How that for an ad hoc explanation of a cockamamie theory?
