Members Glenn F Posted October 27, 2007 Members Posted October 27, 2007 Hi there, Thanks in advance for bearing with me, and for starting a separate thread than the one for my question about the D-15. I am probably going to order online so's I get a case with the guitar. I really liked the D-15s that I played on Friday, but I also would like something other than a dread. I find the body of the 000 a bit, well, sexier, than the dread. So, the question is, what difference in tone and loudness would I generally expect between the two forms? Does the 000-15 hold up to strumming/flatpicking as well as the dread? Again, much thanks for your time and patience! I just want to get the guitar that best suits my needs and desires. Cheers! Glenn
Members Hudman Posted October 27, 2007 Members Posted October 27, 2007 There are no set rules on the use of guitar body shapes. Many people think dreads are for strumming / flatpicking and small bodies are for fingerstyle. Some players play fingerstyle on dreads. Some strummers play OM sized guitars. The best advice is to get out there and play them both. John Mayer and Eric Clapton strum on their OM sized guitars.
Members Glenn F Posted October 27, 2007 Author Members Posted October 27, 2007 Hi, Thanks, but, unfortunately, I don't have access to the 000. The shop where I am thinking of buying it is about a 4 hour drive, and we don't have a car, anyways. Given what I experienced with the dread, though, I am willing to buy the 000 unplayed. I will have a 30 day free return option. Cheers! Glenn EDIT: Well, this is on its way: http://www.thomann.de/gb/martinguitars_ooo15_western.htm

Members Hudman Posted October 27, 2007 Members Posted October 27, 2007 See my edit! Cheers! Glenn Congrats! Make sure you post some pictures and a review here after you get it.
Members Broadus Posted October 28, 2007 Members Posted October 28, 2007 You're going to really enjoy that, I'm sure. Congratulations and be sure to post your impressions. Bill
Members Freeman Keller Posted October 28, 2007 Members Posted October 28, 2007 I think you chose well, Glenn. I was going to point you to sound clips at Maurys and the Podium, but I think you will like the balanced woodyness of the 000. It is a great all around guitar - it should strum, flat and fingerpick equally well and will really want to play the blues. Like Hudman, I want to see some pics when you get it - that is if you can put it down long enough.
Members OldGuitarPlayer Posted October 28, 2007 Members Posted October 28, 2007 Awesome choice Glenn F!! I recently purchased the 000-15 and I it. Even though it's a smaller body than a dread it still is a very nice flatpicker and is great for accompanying vocals. I am new to the fingerstyle thing so I do tend to do more strumming than finger picking and my 000-15 sounds great flatpicked. I love the feel of the neck on mine and it has a wonderful tone. Cogratulations and like everyone else I want to see pics and a review:)
Members Samilyn Posted October 28, 2007 Members Posted October 28, 2007 Hi Glenn, I think you made a great choice. My taste leans towards dreads, but I also think the 000 is very versatile - the best of both worlds. Great for fingerstyle, but still holds up nicely under hard strumming. I don't follow any set rules for what to do with a git of a certain size. If you like what you hear, then you've got a winner. Congrats on your purchase. Let us know how you like it.
Members Terry Allan Hall Posted October 28, 2007 Members Posted October 28, 2007 Great choice, Glenn!...That is a great guitar.
Members Glenn F Posted October 28, 2007 Author Members Posted October 28, 2007 Thanks, everyone, for your feedback! The 000-15 should be here by Wednesday, hopefully Tuesday, though. Thomann is pretty prompt in getting things out their doors, and DHL (Deutschpost) is pretty fast, too. I will post pics, and a report ASAP! Cheers! Glenn
Members Mel Bay Posted October 29, 2007 Members Posted October 29, 2007 You guys are killing me! I'd love both! Both sound great, both are great guitars, and. . . man. .. do I need one! This said, if I had to pick one, if I were forced at gunpoint to pick, or could only have one on a desert island, I'd grit my teeth and take the 000. Ouch! Hard, hard choice! Much angst.
Members AndrewGG Posted October 29, 2007 Members Posted October 29, 2007 I have had a 000-15S, 12 fret, slot head for a week or so. Not only is the classic Martin shape gorgeous but the tone is great too; beautifully balanced with good sustain and it works equally well strummed, flatpicked or fingerpicked. Oh, and bottleneck in open G sounds sublime! If you can manage without the extra two fret access I strongly recommend one.
Members Glenn F Posted October 29, 2007 Author Members Posted October 29, 2007 Well, Thanks for your suggestion, but the 000-15 is on the road already, and will probably be here tomorrow. Since I like to play leads a lot on acoustic, I'd probably prefer the 14 fret model. The 000-15S is a cutie, though! So, yeah: tomorrow, probably early afternoon my time. If I don't update tomorrow, please understand that my iMac is doing funny things, and may be down tomorrow. I spent the day today going hypertensive (more than I already am!) and will likely have to do an OS re-install. Cheers! Glenn PS, my Taylor 310 was playing particularly sweetly today, almost as if she knows that a new 6 string is moving in! lol....
