Members Whalebot Posted October 26, 2007 Members Posted October 26, 2007 So do I, my first guitar was a classical and I'm picking it up more and more. I play it well and it sounds great. But I'm going to pick up a newer model (mine is a no name from the 60's with sentimental value, don't want it in a club) I have a few needs: $1,200. That's about it. I know most are Cedar topped and that gives it that 'classical sound' correct? Whatever, I'm just trying to find a really nice classical that fits folky style playing. As always, the suggestions will abound. I'll stand back and let the fun begin...bjorn, freeman, capo? If you please?
Members phil_harmonic Posted October 26, 2007 Members Posted October 26, 2007 Well, $1200 is more than you would need to get the one I have (Pavan TP-20) which is solid East Indian Rosewood sides and back with solid cedar top. They do make a TP-30 model though that's a bit more. I got mine used along with HSC for $600.www.pavanguitars.comThe Lucida LG777 is the other $600ish guitar I see a lot of peeps recommending. Like I said, there might be a better choice given your $1200 budget.Good luck.
Members denvertrakker Posted October 26, 2007 Members Posted October 26, 2007 The Cordoba Pro R is one you might want to look at, and right in your price range.
Members riffmeister Posted October 26, 2007 Members Posted October 26, 2007 I know most are Cedar topped and that gives it that 'classical sound' correct? No, not really. Many excellent classical guitarists prefer spruce. And then there are many that prefer cedar. You get the picture......
Members Freeman Keller Posted October 26, 2007 Members Posted October 26, 2007 The one I built was spruce over EIR and supposedly a copy of Segovia's 1937 Hauser, which he called "the best guitar he had ever played". And since I know two classical pieces - "Classical Gas" and Kottke's "Jesu - Joy..." (what'cha mean, those aren't classical pieces) it was kind of pointless to keep it so I gave it to my kiddo. There, I"ll go back to the resonators...
Members min7b5 Posted October 26, 2007 Members Posted October 26, 2007 I always like to suggest looking at used guitars:thu: Guitar players are always buying and selling. There
Members Whalebot Posted October 26, 2007 Author Members Posted October 26, 2007 Sorry I forgot to mention you in my post Riff! And the used idea is a good one min. I'm still feeling it out, my L-09 hasn't sold yet so we shall see.
Members denvertrakker Posted October 27, 2007 Members Posted October 27, 2007 Check this too:http://www.elderly.com/new_instruments/names/cordoba-solista-classical-guitar--SOLISTA.htm
Members Sparhawk Posted October 27, 2007 Members Posted October 27, 2007 My first guitar was a classical as well. And I really wish I could find one just like it. I sold it about 20 years ago when I was spending all my free time wind surfing. It was an Espana from Spain, but the thing that made it stand out was the back of the neck was flat. It made playing sooo easy and smooth. I have never seen another like it.... I bought it from one of my high school teachers for $75.00 and sold it for the same price. I always keep looking .....
Members riffmeister Posted October 27, 2007 Members Posted October 27, 2007 forogt to mention, cedar top CGs hit the scene in the late 1950s, early 1960s. Antonio Torres invented the 'modern classical guitar' in the mid 1800s. So it wasn't until about 100 years later that cedar came into fashion. buy used if you can........min7b5 got it right!
Members Hudman Posted October 27, 2007 Members Posted October 27, 2007 I never owned a classical guitar. I came close to buying an inexpensive Walden classical last year on Ebay but I decided against it because I didn't know much about them.
Members zenbu Posted October 27, 2007 Members Posted October 27, 2007 as many here can attest, I really love my old Yamaha Dynamics...they`ve seen em plenty so I won`t post pics this time...no, really. I`ve paid as little as $10.oo and as much as $120.oo for em and for an all solid wood they are bargains here and I know they show up on e-bay `cause they`ve been discussed at another site before. Rounder, fatter necks than classicals of today and no two are exactly the same...pre-CNC and hand made. For your budget you could get a few, or get one and take the wife out for dinner and dancing.
Members gonff1300 Posted October 30, 2007 Members Posted October 30, 2007 I found the following link helpful in picking a classical guitar:http://www.classicalguitarstore.com/pages/a_few_pointers.htm I own both a cedar top and a spruce top. Both are great in different ways.
Members b_rad Posted October 30, 2007 Members Posted October 30, 2007 First... the best thing about used classical
