Members LiveMusic Posted November 4, 2007 Members Posted November 4, 2007 An acquaintance has this guitar. It has no dings. It had old strings on it; one was even wound backwards. It played well and sounded okay but nothing special. He said the strings are old, as in years. Looks like spruce top (although, it was dark color, I assume it is spruce) and rosewood back / sides. I couldn't find much about it as for worth. He wants $1500. If I put new strings on it and it didn't knock my socks off, I wouldn't buy it but if it did... I wonder how much he paid for it and how much it's worth. Someday, I'd like to have a Martin. I like the deep bass sound of some Martins. (Plus enjoy the other benefits of a well-made guitar and the holding power of the value versus an el cheapo.)
Members Etienne Rambert Posted November 4, 2007 Members Posted November 4, 2007 Looks like a lower-cost D-18. His asking price seems high to me. Elderly was asking $1100 for one. Check out the 15 series unless you really want Rosewood. They are cheaper than that new. It's probably a nice guitar. Price is high though. Where y'at in Lousy-Anna?
Members daklander Posted November 5, 2007 Members Posted November 5, 2007 From what I see, other than that Elderly unit, most are priced in that area, or a bit more. I'd say if you can pick it up for a grand or so you'll be ok, considering condition, other than strings.
Members blimpo Posted November 5, 2007 Members Posted November 5, 2007 You can get a NEW Martin SWDGT for less than a grand and they sound fabulous...a cross between a D-18 and D-28 in tone.
Members LiveMusic Posted November 5, 2007 Author Members Posted November 5, 2007 His guitar has a pickup. No volume / tone controls. I think he said piezo. I guess you'd control that with a pre-amp or mixer. Also includes hardshell case. That SWDGT has cherry back / sides. Never heard a guitar using cherry.
Members LiveMusic Posted November 7, 2007 Author Members Posted November 7, 2007 His guitar has a pickup. No volume / tone controls. I think he said piezo. I don't know if the guitar came like this or if it is after-market. How much value would this add to the current used value or the guitar if it did NOT have the pickup?
Members guitarist21 Posted November 7, 2007 Members Posted November 7, 2007 Never heard a guitar using cherry. I've only seen it on Art & Lutheries such as this one: The online specs say the back and sides are "Wild Cherry." (www.artandlutherieguitars.com) I'd be interested to hear how it sounds on the SWDGT, though. Ellen
Members moctzal Posted November 7, 2007 Members Posted November 7, 2007 I'd consider this:http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Martin-D15-Custom-Spruce-and-Rosewood-Acoustic-Guitar?sku=515888orhttp://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Martin-D15-Custom-Spruce-and-Mahogany-Acoustic-Guitar?sku=514700 Each $899, Rosewood or Mahog, take your pick.
Members guitarist21 Posted November 7, 2007 Members Posted November 7, 2007 I apologize for taking this thread in a slighty different direction but the mention of the Martin smartwoods got me looking around Elderly and I found this bad boy: http://www.elderly.com/new_instruments/items/SW00DB.htm Pretty freaking gorgeous if you ask me. I think the rosette's a little weird but overall very cool. Ellen

How much value would this add to the current used value or the guitar if it did NOT have the pickup? After Market pickups really don't factor much into the price. Since the price of the pickup and installation is small in comparison to the price of the actual guitar. I would make sure that the Pup was properly installed and that no damage was done to the guitar.
Members LiveMusic Posted November 8, 2007 Author Members Posted November 8, 2007 How much value does this pickup add?
