hey all, I have a question about acryllic nails. Where is the best place to find them, and is there a certain kind that is better than others? I am a horrible nail-biter and i like the sound of picking with my fingernails, so I thought this would be a good substitute. Thanks,

many in threads about acryllic nails being the answer to picking and plucking woes. Cant's tell you where to go but just get an 'overlay' no actual stuck on falsies and you only need one hand done so half the cost. Go for it, it will change your plucking life.;)

Beauty supply store. Every hair salon gets their products from a beauty supply store at a discount and then retails them to their customers. Also, any good grocery chain store carries beauty products. My problem is I have very wide nail beds and the typical acrylic nail doesn't work. So, I fashion my own from .010 acetate sheet stock when need be. Rather adept at it now.

Edit: And, acrylic nails typically molded to hook downward at the tips and are like playing with talons. The ones I make extend straight out and I find that much mo' better.

Garth - I agree completely. But, there are times when I'll break a natural nail and I won't wait for them to grow out. This past weekend I was moving from one house to another and broke two nails at the quik (middle and ring) and that just won't do.

I've always just used my nails. Can't imagine sticking things on them.

I'm 56. Just got my first nails last week.

$12 for the right hand.

They look great...I was shocked that they look so real.

I have had to adjust the length a bit but I love them.

I don't know why I waited so long to do it.

Oh, they sound great too, except they take some time to get used to. My picks have been in my case for a week now...don't need them as much with these babies. I am loving the "sound" the nails create. The first song I played was Little Martha...Sweet!

P.S....I dont bite them either...Dont know why...I just don't do it. My left hand is starting to look better too.

is just using the acryllic solution, no false tip is added. This is completely different to what you describe. It really is best to go to a nail salon to have it done. DIY ands up in a lot of gunky lumps on your nails.

I have found that the shorter I keep my nails, the fewer problems I have with them. They break less often and on the rare occasions when they do, it is less dramatic since the surrounding nails are only a bit longer.

BTW, how does that acrylic taste?

(I know; like 'chicken')

i have my nails longer than C70man's, and they havent broken or chipped for 3 months or something. i use savarez glue stuff once a week to strengthen them, and i read somewhere that you should never cut your nails with a nail clipper, but use a decent nail file, and always file in the same direction - this apparently reduces chipping or breaking little bits of your nails - its worked great for me, and completely transformed my playing and sound. Classical guitar tremelo seems impossible without them...

get a bit a stick for them though, looks kinda weird with one hand with long nails, and one with normal. but they're useful for getting that first bit of sticky tape of the roll.

You don't say if you had tips put on but if you did you don't need them just ask for an acrylic overlay. Yeehah It's brill.

I was told by someone at a nail salon to take Biotin supplements. Supposed to be good for improving hair and fingernails.

After 8 months of taking 1000 mcg (micrograms) of Biotin daily, along with my regular multi-vitamins, I notice my nails are much less prone to breakage and/or splitting, so it must be working.

Now all I do is keep 3 or 4 coats of clear polish on them. The polish gets chipped, but not the nail.

Aside from taking a supplement, do try to eat healthy and drink plenty of water. The state of your hair and fingernails are good indicators of what's going on with the rest of you. Dry and brittle means you're probably lacking some essential nutrients.

Yep, tips, acrylic overlay the whole works. I must have been in there 45 minutes and only $12 bucks. I wanted her to do my left hand, but she said she wouldn't because i needed to just take better care of them to get them to look right. I did buy a nice file for $1.00. The same kind she used. She said to never cut them, always file. Hopefully they will last 3 months as she expected them to. She made them pretty thick for me.

so- will you be going in for fills? my wife gets hers done and she had to go in every 2 weeks to get the area behind the overlay filled in as the regular grow's.

just thought i would toss that in- i may have a different understanding of it or it maybe a different process-

best of luck with the new picker's 8^)

You can fingernail kits at pharmacy's like CVS, and Rite Aid. They have the nail tip kits, or you can buy strengthening formulas to apply to your nails regularly.

However, be aware that when you apply anything to the top of your fingernail, you are cutting off oxygen, and your own fingernail tends not to grow back as strong, once you start covering them up with plastic, glue, nail polish, etc. Also, trying to file your own nail tips down to be even with your own finger nails, may also thin out your own fingernail from sanding that misses the mark. Been there, done that, hurt my fingernails when I was younger.

I do occasionally use tips, out of necessity if I have a broken finger nail or something. I just don't wear them 7 days a week.
