Members xXTheHerpesXx Posted November 11, 2007 Members Posted November 11, 2007 hey im posting this in here and the songwriters forum. basically i stumbled across a group of guys doin an online open mic on the myspace acoustic forums and i wanted to spread the word. its really cool i downloaded this software called "ventrilo" and it allowed me to connect to the guy who was using his computer as the server (i downloaded the client software). the program was like a voice chat room and we were all there to perform music and listen to eachother. right now we can only support up to 8 users at a time but apparently you can sign up for a service and you can host up to like 90 people. i run on dialup and i heard everybody fine and clear with minimal lag and cutting out. i wanted to just spread the word because i know theres a lot of folks in here that wanna play for other people to get the "live" experience and this is perfect. this is a link to the forum where i read about it on myspace. http://forums.myspace.com/t/3555766.aspx?fuseaction=forums.viewthread&PageIndex=1&SortOrder=0 peace, ant
Members daklander Posted November 11, 2007 Members Posted November 11, 2007 Yeah, like we need to go to myspace and download software. Yeah, sure. Everyone here wants a piece of that drive by trojan that's becoming quite prevalent there.By the way gang, it also targets mac users....
Members blue2blue Posted November 11, 2007 Members Posted November 11, 2007 I'm sure xXTheHerpesXx was just trying to turn folks onto a cool idea (and I DO think it's a cool idea) -- but the timing is kind of problematic. This news story was just hitting: Singer's MySpace Page Hacked, Cleaned, RehackedBy Lisa VaasNovember 9, 2007Updated: MySpace promptly cleaned up Alicia Keys' booby-trapped page, which was promptly reattacked.MySpace has been breached by an attacker who's planted malware and a fake codec on a number of musicians' sites, most notably, that of Alicia Keys, a popular singer whose site was booby-trapped, cleaned up for a few hours and promptly rehacked. Exploit Prevention Labs' Roger Thompson said in a Nov. 8 posting that MySpace fixed Keys' page, which had been rigged with an HREF image reference to the co8vd.cn/s/ fake codec, within hours of EPL's having posted a videotape of the exploit.Hours after getting cleaned up, the site was once again crawling with malware that would snare anybody with an unpatched system who even came close to clicking on anything on the page. That's because of a new twist that an EPL spokesman said hasn't been seen before: The HTML in the page contains some sort of very large image map that spans 8,000-by-1,000 pixels. The malware is being hosted in China and is installing rootkits and probably DNS (Domain Name System) changers, he said. DNS changers are the same thing being installed by a well-known family of Windows Trojans, the controllers of which have recently started targeting Macs as well.DNS changers are also a well-known calling card of the Russian Business Network, an infamous ISP that hosts a gamut of online nastyware, from child porn sites to money laundering."This could easily be the same group that recently started watching for Mac users and offering a Mac Trojan as needed, and if that's so, will also add to the effectiveness of the attack," Thompson wrote.... When a visitor visits the infected page, they're first hit by an exploit that installs malware in the background if their system is not fully patched against the latest security vulnerabilities. The victim is next presented with the fake codec, with a message telling them they need to install a codec to view the video. The attack is thus multilayered and still has a chance to ensnare users with fully patched systems if they click on the fake codec. The chance that a MySpace user would click on a link to download a codec are good, Thompson said. In June, MySpace was also hit by a worm that was turning users' sites into bots to serve phishing scams and viruses, using "fast flux" to hide its phishing and malware delivery sites behind ever-shifting networks of proxy servers that are next to impossible to track down. The current attack is worrisome in that it doesn't amount to a simple case of crooks getting their hands on musicians' user names and passwords. Other bands that have been hit by the same attacker or attackers include the French funk band Greements of Fortune and the Glasgow rock band Dykeenies. What's not clear, Thompson said, is how the attackers are compromising MySpace, nor how widespread the attack is, given that neither Google nor MySpace was indexing the malevolent piece of HTML as of Nov. 8. A quick Google search Nov. 9 similarly led only to victims' testimony or news reports.MySpace provided a statement that gave no clue as to how widespread the attack has been, how many sites were affected, nor how the attackers penetrated MySpace's defenses twice in a few hours. The company did say, however, that phishing is illegal and that MySpace doesn't like it. http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,2214681,00.asp

How could you even start to think that someone with such a catchy handle as The Herpes would expose forum members to any contagion?
Members BrandonBrinley Posted November 11, 2007 Members Posted November 11, 2007 ive posted a very simalar topic a way back about a program called teamspeak2 www.goteamspeak.com much easier to run this program works the same i think even better ... if anyone wants to do this open mic night or whenever you wanna jam with somebody online all you need is a mic headphones or speakers and your set... somebody whould need to run it off thier computers or i could try and get a sponsered server and we can get a ton of people in the server pretty much as many as we want with much better fidelity than ventrilo
Members xXTheHerpesXx Posted November 11, 2007 Author Members Posted November 11, 2007 i wish someone would look into gettin a server/static ip for this. imagine a big voice chat room with a bunch of people that you could log onto any time and have a live audience/performance. i figure if you're too shy to participate in a real open mic, this thing would be a great stepping stone to become comfortable with the idea. which program would work best? i dunno, but i've looked around for websites that specialize in this idea and i have not found one yet so i guess its an independant thing right now. for me, its good cause im on dialup and its hard to listen to a lot of stuff unless its streaming lo fi or unless i wanna wait for the download.
Members Raj Posted November 11, 2007 Members Posted November 11, 2007 Ventrilo and TeamSpeak are both good programs for voice comms that have been around for years. However, the sound quality's pretty poor.
Members daklander Posted November 11, 2007 Members Posted November 11, 2007 How could you even start to think that someone with such a catchy handle as The Herpes would expose forum members to any contagion? Exactly!!! That coupled with the crap going on again with bugs from myspace.

Members xXTheHerpesXx Posted November 12, 2007 Author Members Posted November 12, 2007 hey, I aint no Trojan man... and ya i've been infected in the past so i can definitely see your concerns. even with protection those little buggers can penetrate your system through a backdoor (totally screwed my hard drive!). the point is, nothing beats the raw feeling of a live performance (even 1 on 1 is more exciting than just doing it alone in ur room) so even if myspace is unclean you can totally trust xxtheherpesxx. :poke:
Members blue2blue Posted November 12, 2007 Members Posted November 12, 2007 Thanks for your very nice p.m., ant! I'm glad you understood about the post in the songwriting forum! As I mentioned in my reply, I think online open mics sound like a great idea and I used to participate in some via PalTalk, organized by some of the old Mp3.com artists. As I mentioned, I experimented a little with Skype's Skypecasting and it looked kind of promising. Let's stay in touch on this... PS... I think your screen name might be making some of us veterans of the wide open 60s and 70s reflect back on those trips to the crowded public health STD clinic... er... not that I ever... uh... well... uh... fortunately, the tests came back negative.
Members BrandonBrinley Posted November 12, 2007 Members Posted November 12, 2007 why didnt i think of skype ?
Members blue2blue Posted November 12, 2007 Members Posted November 12, 2007 why didnt i think of skype ? It kind of worked... They were talking like they were going to do some work on the Skypecast interface -- it's poorly documented but it seemed fairly usable. The moderator/m.c. whatever they call it can control who can talk -- if I recall correctly, I think it works better when there are fewer people talking and more people listening -- but that's precisely what you want in an open mic or lecture. Honestly, I've forgotten all the details of the interface. There's a text chat -- which is also important. On the old Paltalk open mics only one person had "the mic" at a time but there was sometimes a very lively chat back and forth... since a lot of the people knew each other from the Mp3.com BB there was a fair amount of hourseplay -- trying to make the singer laugh in the middle of a song by what you were typing into the chat, for instance. Good fun... If someone wants to experiment with it, let me know. I'm game. You can p.m. me through the HC system.
Members soups41 Posted November 12, 2007 Members Posted November 12, 2007 I would definitely be interested in this
