Members VengefulTikiGod Posted November 24, 2007 Members Posted November 24, 2007 http://www.daddario.com/DADProducts.aspx?ID=2&CLASS=ABQA I like the concept, I'm a jazz/blues guy, but I don't want to loose too much brightness should I want to strum something out. Are these the same as their 1/2 wounds, but for acoustics?
Members garthman Posted November 24, 2007 Members Posted November 24, 2007 I've not tried D'Addario flat tops but I have tried a different make. This type of string is a normal roundwound string that has been put through a jig to grind off the tops of the winding wire. Therefore you get less finger noise without sacrificing some of the roundwound tone. IMO, they are better than flatwound strings (these use a metal tape for the outer winding) for an acoustic guitar. I think they would be a good compromise for your type of music.
Members jwm1958m Posted November 24, 2007 Members Posted November 24, 2007 I used flat tops for years, but recently had some work done on one of my guitars where they installed D'Addarios PB lights instead. There is a real difference in brightness, so I have gone back to regular strings. I didn't realize how much difference there was . I am considering trying a set of their EXPs. The flat tops do a great job of eliminating squeek and if you are playing amped then you can easily make up for the lack of brightness with some eq. They are also great for slide.
Members paganskins Posted November 24, 2007 Members Posted November 24, 2007 I'm planning to try them next re-string, I've suffered from squeaks for years on my dread. Fairly limited choice of guages though and no sets for 12s. Will be keeping an eye on this thread for everyone else's thoughts.

They do the flat tops in most common gauges - certainly 12's, look here: http://www.daddario.com/DADProducts.aspx?ID=2&CLASS=ABQA
Members paganskins Posted November 24, 2007 Members Posted November 24, 2007 Sorry, I meant sets for 12 strings. Strangely though I tend to suffer less on the 12 string anyway.
