Members hermok Posted October 5, 2007 Members Posted October 5, 2007 I been lookinFor strumming and solos!!Been looking at a Taylor 814... anything better??... it has to have a pickup though
Members timmay8612 Posted October 5, 2007 Members Posted October 5, 2007 I'd look for a used Huss & Dalton, Goodall, or Collings. Sometimes you can get lucky and find them for 2k
Members min7b5 Posted October 5, 2007 Members Posted October 5, 2007 I agree with above posts. Find a minty used small shop guitar and add a pickup if you really need it after:thu:
Members Freeman Keller Posted October 5, 2007 Members Posted October 5, 2007 For 2K you have some really stellar choice, the 814 is just one of them. In the Taylor stable I would also look at some of the new GS series. And even tho I own a Taylor, my personal preference are Martins and their clones, SCGC, Collings and similar. If you like the spruce over EIR GA size of the 814 I would add all the wonderful smaller Martins like the OM-21 and 28's, and the various 000-28's. By looking at gits without a pickup and adding a K&K you'll open even more options. How badly do you need the cutaway? How much do you like the 1-3/4 nut and Taylor neck profile?
Members Broadus Posted October 5, 2007 Members Posted October 5, 2007 Wish I could help, but that's one too many zero's for me. Bill

Members mayan Posted October 5, 2007 Members Posted October 5, 2007 Taylor GS Spruce/Rosewood model ? I think that it's the best sounding acoustic of ANY period !!!! It's also $2000 greenbacks !
Members hermok Posted October 5, 2007 Author Members Posted October 5, 2007 Thanks for the info. I tried the santa cruz and they are all amazing but no pickups

I just sold a Martin d35. Great guitar but it lacked something, maybe the big tone of a Gibson.

Members Bernie P. Posted October 5, 2007 Members Posted October 5, 2007 Theres a Gallagher listed in the FS Forum.
Members Freeman Keller Posted October 5, 2007 Members Posted October 5, 2007 Thanks for the info. I tried the santa cruz and they are all amazing but no pickups A hundred bucks will add a Pure Western or a Mini to an outstanding guitar.

Members guitarcapo Posted October 6, 2007 Members Posted October 6, 2007 Personally I'd get a Gibson J200. I know Gibson gets bashed a lot on HC but a nice Montana Division J200 is my favorite acoustic. Not outrageously priced compared to it's competitors like it's electrics are either.
Members iago Posted October 6, 2007 Members Posted October 6, 2007 I don't think you can get a J2000 for 2K.
Members guitarist21 Posted October 6, 2007 Members Posted October 6, 2007 Thanks for the info. I tried the santa cruz and they are all amazing but no pickups Just like FK said, buy your own pickup. Find a guitar whose acoustic sound you love and put your own pickup in. Lots of great aftermarket options like the K&K Pure Western Mini or the L.R. Baggs iBeam. Ellen

Members Etienne Rambert Posted October 6, 2007 Members Posted October 6, 2007 814's must have come down in price if they're selling for $2k. You might try playing one of these. I know I want one really bad. But the 814 is a really nice guitar too. I've recorded a lot with an 814ce. Loved every minute I played it. Agree with GC too on Gibson too. You'd have to be really lucky to find the right one.
Members LiveMusic Posted October 6, 2007 Members Posted October 6, 2007 WOW, that is one gorgeous guitar. I have always loved the looks of a Gibson J45 but this Guild is even nicer looking. What is it and what is approximate price? Do you have an opinion on its sound... type of sound. EDIT: It must a D-55. I gotta try one of these on. 814's must have come down in price if they're selling for $2k. You might try playing one of these. I know I want one really bad. But the 814 is a really nice guitar too. Members Etienne Rambert Posted October 6, 2007 Members Posted October 6, 2007 D-55's sell new between $1900 & 2100, depending on whether you have the DTar pickup system installed. They are reputed to sound big. (That's an understatement.) Very different from an 814CE. If there is a knock on the D-55, it's that it sounds too big. It overwhelms. I loved the way the 814ce played. I loved the way it felt when I held it. The Guild is a heavy dreadnought with a big sound. It won't play, feel or sound like the 814ce. It will sound a lot better. It probably won't play as easily or feel so right. So between the D-55 & the 814ce, you have two good extremes to compare and contrast, an alpha & omega of high-end steel string acoustics. Find one & play it. See what you think.
Members redriverensemb Posted October 6, 2007 Members Posted October 6, 2007 I recently got a Taylor ce414-sl (koa sides and back, spruce top, electronics) for less than 2K. I have been having so much fun.
Members BackPocket Posted October 6, 2007 Members Posted October 6, 2007 I agree that those Guilds are a great suggestion. I have a Martin HD-16R LSH. I think it's a great strum and projects really well. I'm not sure if that would make it great for solos but mine seems to cut through well enough playing with others.
Members hermok Posted October 7, 2007 Author Members Posted October 7, 2007 I used to own a 70ies Guild D35. Maybe the best sounding guitar Ive ever had, but not a player. It sounds like Ill be happy with the Taylor!!
Members rjoxyz Posted October 7, 2007 Members Posted October 7, 2007 Taylor GS Spruce/Rosewood model ? I think that it's the best sounding acoustic of ANY period !!!! It's also $2000 greenbacks ! I have one and agree (almost) completely. Walked into one of those unexpected deals and got it for $1450 with the Expression System. On the other hand, I bought my Martin HD-28 for about $2000. Could add a pickup to it. Although the GS has the most full and balanced tone I have experienced, that HD-28 just has the powerful Martin sound I love.
