Members Abando Posted October 4, 2007 Members Posted October 4, 2007 Hi. I'm looking for an all purpose amp that sounds good whether you are using an all electric or an electric/acoustic guitar. I need it to be 400.00 or less, must have good effects built in, a headphone jack, a tuner and a mic input and must be durable and easy to carry around. Anyone own such an amp? Thanks in advance. Abando
Members mister natural Posted October 4, 2007 Members Posted October 4, 2007 Roland Cube Street It's new, around $300. and oh, so desirable
Members BuleriaChk Posted October 5, 2007 Members Posted October 5, 2007 And as of today, still fantasy-ware.....:-) Of course, I'm going to get it. But I also have the Vox DA5 and DA10 which sound fantastic; aside from form factor and the tuner and reverb on the mic channel, the Vox's are $100 cheaper. And I say again, the Voxes sound great, especially with acoustic (the cleans and effects are very nice.) Roland Cube Street It's new, around $300. and oh, so desirable
Members DonK Posted October 5, 2007 Members Posted October 5, 2007 One of the Line 6 Spyder's, or a used Flextone may be your best bet. Keep in mind that these are electric guitar amps at hear, so even though they've got several emulations of very clean amps that you can use with acoustic guitar, the amps are going to have a single 12" speaker rather than the horn and tweeter arrangement common to dedicated acoustic amps (which are designed to function more as a small PA system).
Members Terry Allan Hall Posted October 5, 2007 Members Posted October 5, 2007 The only suggestion that comes to mind is a Crate Limo... $369.99 most places excellent effects built in a headphone jack a tuner and a mic input durable and easy to carry around (22 lbs) plus, a great built-in battery, so you can use it anywhere (about 6-8 hours per charge and can be plugged into the wall or a car's lighter jack for power/charge. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1oiu_c4rRs http://www.crateamps.com/products/pindex.php?prodID=26 I've got the "less bells and whistles" Taxi 30 and use it almost every day, either as a practice PA or as a "mini-PA" for smaller venues/nursing homes/hospitals/etc.
Members garthman Posted October 5, 2007 Members Posted October 5, 2007 Buy a reasonable quality multi-effects pedal like a Zoom or similar. It doesn't matter what amp you use then - just set up a couple of banks with different EQ (and maybe a little chorus, reverb and compressor) settings, feed through your acoustic, and you can do anything. Use the presets for your electric and you have the best of both worlds.
Members timmay8612 Posted October 5, 2007 Members Posted October 5, 2007 No such item exists. Stick to PA systems or acoustic amps for acoustic, electric amps for electric. Better to buy two amps, say a Fender Blues Jr. used somewhere and a used acoustic amp for 200 bucks or so. Spend a little more, get a lot more.

Members timmay8612 Posted October 5, 2007 Members Posted October 5, 2007 Does the limo actually do a faithful representation of a PA or true acoustic amp or does it sound like a really clean electric amp with acoustic guitar? If thats the case (the latter) then to my ears, its not going to sound real good.

If thats the case (the latter) then to my ears, its not going to sound real good. The overdrive sound, when used for an electric, is pretty sweet, the clean sound is very "PA-like" for acoustic instruments/voices, and it actually makes a decent bass amp, as well. Watch the youtube video in my intial post...
Members timmay8612 Posted October 5, 2007 Members Posted October 5, 2007 Well, while the you tube video may have had the most boring host ever, sounds like it would do some of both, although I'd wager the electric sounds aren't going to be anything spectacular, but for the price range, spectacular really isn't available now is it? Good pick.
Members fingerpicker Posted October 5, 2007 Members Posted October 5, 2007 Actually, the Limo does work quite well for both. I've got one. Terry is dead on. It works real good for acoustic guitar, and great for vocals. I use it at a cafe where a full PA wasn't needed and I use it for beach wedding ceremonies. (Battery powered too!!) I plugged my Schecter electric in the electric channel and it sounds real good. Nothing like a Marshall or big ole Fender but it does sound good and the overdrive isn't bad at all.
Members JaLester Posted October 5, 2007 Members Posted October 5, 2007 You guys need to check out the new mackie hotwire VT12. It's not out yet and I am sure it is extremely expensive, but it sounds very unique. I would love to explain more, but the website explains things much better. It's a type of modeling amp, but really it's very different. When you change amplifier types it actually changes the circuitry of the amp to keep the correct analog preamp and power section. This is really a great idea if it works as well as advertised, and being able to use your strat and martin on the same amp would be amazing for gigging live. Hopefully I'll get a chance to demo one as soon as they come out.

It's fairly decent, but it's not going to sound as hot as a '61 Deluxe Reverb, I'll agree...but it's a good "multi-purpose" amp. Good pick.

Members totamus Posted December 7, 2007 Members Posted December 7, 2007 I have a Limo also, and have said before that if I only had one amp, it would be the limo. It is truly a great amp. If not a limo it would be a keyboard amp, which is a very clean amp amd most are set up with multiple inputs, phantom power, and decent eq.
