Members gearo999 Posted December 5, 2007 Members Posted December 5, 2007 Looking to buy a nice Acoustic for gigging. Need something under $1000 that stays in tune well and has a good integrated pickup. I tried Ibanez but don't like the sound but they play well. I'm leaning towards Taylor....
Members Stackabones Posted December 5, 2007 Members Posted December 5, 2007 She's my current Rocinante ... I use the UST and I just installed a condenser mic inside it--use a blend of the two. I've just started running it through a Fishman Aura Imaging Pedal for Nylon and getting great results.

Taylor is nice, look for used in your price range. Personally if I were you I'd get Larrivee (OM-03?) or if you want to spend a little less and still get a great guitar, Epiphone Masterbilt rocks in the around-$500 range (check out a DR-500M). Either way I'd put my own aftermarket pickup in later, not settle for what they've got built in. K&K makes great pickups- I have one for my main gigging acoustic, an Epiphone Masterbilt EF-500R. Here's me "gigging" with Alex DeGrassi (I didn't actually gig with Alex Degrassi, I just played in a clinic with him ) Ellen
Members Chicken Monkey Posted December 5, 2007 Members Posted December 5, 2007 Honestly, I use a Fender Parlor I paid $170 for. I'm in a bluegrass/jug band, and it does the job. I don't need exquisite tone, since I'm kind of playing snare drum all night, but it sounds great. I put a soundhole pickup in (which cost about what the guitar did) and should order some new tuners, but I haven't had any problems.
Members jamison162 Posted December 5, 2007 Members Posted December 5, 2007 2002 Taylor 810C, Englemann top, K&K Trinity, Bone Saddle, Newtone Strings, PADI, Ultrasound AG50.
Members melandy Posted December 5, 2007 Members Posted December 5, 2007 My main git is a Martin DC-15E. If I were to add a new git to my very small collection, it would be a Larrivee OM-03, maybe -03r, and put in an aftermarket pickup. If you look in the right places, this should be in your price range, as well as several other body types of Larrivee in the -03 series. If you want to investigate a Larri, One place to look would be Notable. Send an email to prices@notableguitars.com, and you'll get an automated response with a price list. I've never dealt with Notable, but they get a lot of love here on the forum (as do several other dealers). If nothing else, this will give you an idea of what real-world prices for Larris are. EDIT: I forgot the part of your Q about tuning. When I first got started, I had a horrible time keeping a git in tune. Turns out it was due to the rat's nest of strings I had going on at the tuners. If you are not really solid on how to string a guitar, pay for a setup with a competent tech and watch exactly what s/he does. I tried looking a tutorials online, and never could get exactly what I was supposed to do, but watching a tech do it got it in my head. Since then I've had no tuning issues on any of my gits (Martin, Fender beater, Washburn electric). -Andy
Members moctzal Posted December 5, 2007 Members Posted December 5, 2007 I use the Taylor or the Washburn in my sig.The ES system is great, I've never needed a pre-amp (it might help a bit, but I haven't "needed" it) and it's very resistant to feedback (magnetic pup and two switchable soundboard transducers if you get the most recent ES system from last year). No piezo quack! You should be able to find a used 310/314ce in your price range.Good luck!
Members min7b5 Posted December 5, 2007 Members Posted December 5, 2007 I do almost a 100 dates a year with my trusty SCGC OM/PW 90% of the time I just mic it with an AKG 451, but it has a K&K in it just in case:)
Members OldGuitarPlayer Posted December 5, 2007 Members Posted December 5, 2007 I use my Taylor 114 or my Sigma DM2. I use my NeoD soundhole pickup and a Behringer outboard pre-amp/DI gizmo in both.

From what I can see the Epi looks very very nice The only Masterbilt I ever tried was a sort of vintage sunburst "store demo" model with very dead strings which really did nothing to enhance the tone. It also had a very pronounced V-Neck which I wasn't prepared for. If they (the music store) had a natural wood coloured one with new strings I would probably have given it more consideration. It's too bad they since are very hard to come by around here and you basically have to special order them from the store....
Members totamus Posted December 5, 2007 Members Posted December 5, 2007 My main Gigging guitar is my trusty old, battle weary D28. It is currently in the shop and a suitable replacement is an old Yamaha L series I stumbled across.
Members Mikeo Posted December 6, 2007 Members Posted December 6, 2007 My regular gigging acoustic is a Martin 0016RGT w/ cutways. I bought a Martin 00016RGT for my living room player and liked it so much I sold my Taylor 414CE and bought another one. The 3rd pic is me with my favorite Martin I own , which is a Martin MC28 and was only made by Martin for about 4 years or so.

Members ClockworkChange Posted December 6, 2007 Members Posted December 6, 2007 I use a takamine G series 12 string I don't no exactly what it is, but it is really a great guitar for $800 with a case, I got it about a year ago and its the only acoustic I play now.
Members T Dunn Posted December 6, 2007 Members Posted December 6, 2007 This one: Wechter Pathmaker, 3 pickups: Under-saddle, magnetic in-hole, and internal mic, all blendable.

Members Michael Martin Posted December 6, 2007 Members Posted December 6, 2007 Find a guitar you love to play, and then put a PU in it. That's what I ended up doing. Much happier with that than with any A/E I have played. I play an old Yammie jumbo (CJ838s) with a Baggs I-beam inside. I installed it myself--and if I can, believe me--anybody can.
