Members C70man Posted December 20, 2007 Members Posted December 20, 2007 My sister found this old Hohner in her closet. She said I bought it for her in '71. I don't know where its been, but i had to replace the tuners, fix the bridge, replace the nut and restring it. Heres something that actually sounds good and probably can be had for pennies...Laminated top but solid sides and back. I have included a sound clip...excuse the $2mic (shown in Pic). It does sound as good as some Guilds I have played....no excuses for my voice...first run thru on a new song I transcribed ....a work in progress http://audio.xanga.com/c70man/53f861682933/audio.html
Members Freeman Keller Posted December 20, 2007 Members Posted December 20, 2007 Nice, the git sounds like it is happy to be out of the closet and making music. I expect an mp3 (or more) to put up at the Annex.
Members kwakatak Posted December 20, 2007 Members Posted December 20, 2007 Ya gotta love those old cheap guitars! I have two guitars that fall in the same general category. I have an old Kay made of low-grade laminates that had a similar problem with the 3-on-a-plate tuners. I replaced them for $10. My Tak was left behind at my aunt's brother in law's place in South Florida many years ago and spent some time in his attic. He gave it to me when I was in college 15 years ago and the years then and since have not been kind. I had a $45 set of Gotoh tuners, a JLD Bridge Dcctor, a new plastic saddle and had several sloppy repairs and a couple of setups done to it. It plays like butter and sounds better than it looks!
Members C70man Posted December 20, 2007 Author Members Posted December 20, 2007 Ya gotta love those old cheap guitars! I don't know how cheap it was new, can't remember. But some of these boxes actually play pretty nice. I had to mess with the action quite a bit and its still not perfect. I'm going to drop it off at my "guitar fixers" house and see what he can do for it. My sister is coming down to see me in January and I want to have it ready to go for her. Sad thing is, I'm probably going to get attached to the thing before she gets here...The risk in taking care of other peoples stuff. Oh well, then it will be time for my late winter project...my first kit. P.S. you gotta love Freeman's tenacity. I get more worked up with every post of his project. Can't wait to bite my teeth into one.

I'm sure you're going to have a blast creating a new git from scratch. I so envy anyone with enough workspace to attempt something like that. I get all worked up over Freeman's projects, too, and those of the other skilled folks here who have posted their restorations and builds. Be sure to post pics as the project comes along.
