Members OldGuitarPlayer Posted December 31, 2007 Members Posted December 31, 2007 All this talk lately about Gypsy Jazz had made me visit the YouTube. This is the Rosenberg Trio featuring Stochelo Rosenberg: Watch this until the end to see brilliant timing and in my mind the definition of "tight"...absolutely amazing musicianship and they make it look so effortless...... Members Samilyn Posted December 31, 2007 Members Posted December 31, 2007 Does it get any tighter? Nope. Brilliant! Thanks for that one, OGP!
Members Stackabones Posted January 1, 2008 Members Posted January 1, 2008 Lots of dedication right there. Very inspiring!!!
Members Pascal Posted January 1, 2008 Members Posted January 1, 2008 It has to be said that this version owes a lot to Django, though. Anybody heard the latest Rosenberg Trio CD? It's supposed to be great...
Members sumpm1 Posted January 1, 2008 Members Posted January 1, 2008 Amazing musicianship is 100% correct. I personally do not enjoy this type of music though.
Members Broadus Posted January 1, 2008 Members Posted January 1, 2008 Not my cup of tea, necessarily, but the playing is phenomenal. Bill
Members simplygoodmusic Posted January 1, 2008 Members Posted January 1, 2008 It has to be said that this version owes a lot to Django, though. Anybody heard the latest Rosenberg Trio CD? It's supposed to be great... I've been looking for it all over here, but couldn't find it.I was told Nous'che's rhythm work is particularly good in it. The rosenberg trio is great, and of late I've even managed to get into their "suenos gitanos" cd, which is no way near gypsy jazz. Stochelo is one of the greatest modern players, and the family chemistry is always evident.
Members simplygoodmusic Posted January 1, 2008 Members Posted January 1, 2008 By the way, speaking of stochelo rosenberg, check this video out. It might not be too good for those of you with slow connections, as its VERY long, but its a full romane and stochelo show...so its worth it. Its really only gypsy jazz influenced...there's even a drummer in there. But its amazing in my opinion. I would suggest you take a while to load it up first. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3499888316189040754&q=romane+stochelo&total=35&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=0 If you can, I'd suggest finding the time to sit down and watch it fully...otherwise just let it load and skip around.
Members LaurentB Posted January 1, 2008 Members Posted January 1, 2008 They come from a village very near my hometown in the Netherlands. They are indeed great.

Members LaurentB Posted January 1, 2008 Members Posted January 1, 2008 Hey, Laurent, I spent a few summers up in Groningen. Where do the Rosenbergs and you come from? Groningen is in the very North of the Netherlands. I live in Eindhoven, a bit bigger town than Groningen (but not nearly as beautiful) which lies in the South, not far from the Belgian border. The Rosenbergs come from a couple of villages east of Eindhoven, Nuenen and Gerwen.
Members Samilyn Posted January 2, 2008 Members Posted January 2, 2008 Amazing musicianship is 100% correct. I personally do not enjoy this type of music though. That's the nice thing about git playing. We can all admire someone who exhibits such skill even though we don't usually listen to their particular genre.
Members Terry Allan Hall Posted January 2, 2008 Members Posted January 2, 2008 Back in '94, when Roseberg was like 14 or so, he had a group called Sinti that put out an album by the same name ("Sinti")...that album was so good, because, while he was very fast even back then, he put a lot more gypsy soul into the songs... Look for this album...it's the real deal! Edit: Ooops, my mistake...Jimmy is Stochelo's younger cousin, but if you get a chance to hear Jimmy, I think you'll agree that that kind of techniques and speed mixed with some Gypsy Soul, is amazing stuff! http://www.jimmyrosenberg.nl/page3EN.html

Apparently for quite a number of years Jimmy had developed a heroin addiction and spent some time in Jail. He more or less had not been playing but now...he is back out of jail and clean and playing as good as ever. Good for him (and us) since the kid is only 27 yrs old and has a lifetime of music ahead of him to share. So ... I'm checking it out now and I just heard their version of "Nature Boy"! Lush. And now they're kicking into "R n Bis"!!!! One of my favs off Double Jeu! EDIT: And Blue Rondo a la Turk!!! Such an inventive version. Also off Double Jeu. I guess this show was in support of that disc?
Members Pascal Posted January 3, 2008 Members Posted January 3, 2008 EDIT: And Blue Rondo a la Turk!!! Such an inventive version. Also off Double Jeu. I guess this show was in support of that disc? Yes, they did a European tour with that band. I saw them in the South of France. Great, great concert.
Members simplygoodmusic Posted January 3, 2008 Members Posted January 3, 2008 Lucky you! I admit I loved elegance just as much though. Wait till they get to "accent groove" though. GREAT performance of that piece. I also got the live cd+dvd. I've been unable to see the DVD as I'm in Israel now, but the cd was pretty good.

He more or less had not been playing but now...he is back out of jail and clean and playing as good as ever. He's been in and out of jail a few times.... and the last time I heard (mid December) his concerts in Paris were cancelled at the last minute. Whether he is back in jail or not, I don't know, but it seems to be drug-related again. So... well, bad news.

The first piece might be a little like that, but even then, I find it very musical. These players are strongly jazz influenced, in which, in my opinion, slow soulful playing doesn't always work. This "all over the place" sound really adds to the overall feel. Lets call it opinion:thu:
