Members Whalebot Posted January 9, 2008 Members Posted January 9, 2008 Me and the Queeq met up tonight at a coffeehouse in Northville (MI) He brought his Larrivee Baritone and a crazy guitar made out of pencil lead. He really blew me away with his fingerstyle. I'm most appreciative to him for getting me out of the house and playing again. it is what I needed, not another guitar. All in all it was a great night after I shook off my jitters. Great couple of folks also played tonight, Seth and Darwin, and he host was great too. Perfect open mic venue. Thanks Queeq!!

Members Hudman Posted January 9, 2008 Members Posted January 9, 2008 Mark is a cool guy. I may have to check that place out. Northville is a little far from me, but it sounds like it's worth the trip.
Members totamus Posted January 9, 2008 Members Posted January 9, 2008 Way too cool. THAT is what it is all about. The music, and the friends...

Members T.B. Posted January 9, 2008 Members Posted January 9, 2008 Would've like to have been a fly on wall to see both of you soaking up the atmosphere and playing together. Joy. Trina
Members guitarist21 Posted January 9, 2008 Members Posted January 9, 2008 Pencil lead?? I didn't know Queg had a composite guitar. Pics? But I'm glad you had a good time. Might I ask what coffeehouse you played at? I'm going to be in Grand Rapids this weekend and I'd be up for taking an alternative route home. Ellen
Members Queequeg Posted January 9, 2008 Members Posted January 9, 2008 Playing out > GASI'd rather play than shop! Playing trumps shopping every time. Thanks for joining us, Whale. Sure hope to see you again, man.
Members OldGuitarPlayer Posted January 9, 2008 Members Posted January 9, 2008 You guys are soooo lucky. I wish I lived in the States as I would love to go to an open mic and jam with you guys too. I don't even know where Grand Rapids (near Detroit?) is and secondly I don't have a passport...so all travel outside the country is off. Before the 911 tragedy Canadians didn't need a passport to enter the USA but now we do and it takes months to get one. Maybe I can sneak across the border.....?Seriously, it sounds like you guys had a great time and maybe it's something you should do like once a month. I just put an ad on my local musicans trading post website looking for players who want to learn and jam on some Gypsy Jazz. I already got responses. One email was from a guy inviting to come to a show featuring a local GJ group at the end of the month. The other response was from a fellow who is like me...just wants to jam and learn some old standards too so that might be fun. I am glad to hear you guys are out there having fun!
Members guitarist21 Posted January 9, 2008 Members Posted January 9, 2008 We're in the southeastern corner of the state, Ellen. A few hours from Grand Rapids, close to Detroit. If you're heading home to Chicago, this is decidedly out of your way. But if you're going back to Boston, it might make sense... Would love to meet you & say hello. First of all, your guitar is kickin, thanks for the pics.Second, there was actually sort of a plan to meet my family in South Bend for the weekend so Detroit metro area wouldn't have been too out of my way. But now it looks like that's not going to happen. Someday I'll head up to your folks' country. Ellen
Members totamus Posted January 9, 2008 Members Posted January 9, 2008 We oughta plan a 3 day weekend campout at one of the great michigan camp areas. Sounds like there is a preponderance of people close enough to make it work. I would come...
Members Freeman Keller Posted January 9, 2008 Members Posted January 9, 2008 So I assume you guys recorded this and are sending me the mp3's to post at the Annex, eh? If you're going to jam you better include the rest of us. OMG, I just looked at my Post counter. I'd better get back to work.
Members Queequeg Posted January 9, 2008 Members Posted January 9, 2008 So I assume you guys recorded this and are sending me the mp3's to post at the Annex, eh? Oh man, I hope not. If any tapes exist of my (you call that a...? ) "performance", I'll pay twice the going rate to have them shredded.Whoop Whoop Whoop!!!FK goes to the Hall of Fame!
Members guitarist21 Posted January 9, 2008 Members Posted January 9, 2008 OMG, I just looked at my Post counter. I'd better get back to work.Congrats, Freeman! I think that all Hall of Fame members have to wear hats like this one:Ellen

Members Samilyn Posted January 9, 2008 Members Posted January 9, 2008 Way too cool. THAT is what it is all about. The music, and the friends... +1000 SteveO and I have a great time jamming at the coffeehouse. Even more fun is the fact that we were already "AG forum friends." Good for you, Whale! Glad to hear you're getting out and playing instead of buying gits you don't want or need.

Members Samilyn Posted January 9, 2008 Members Posted January 9, 2008 I wouldn't say don't wantThe want is what's the issue, which is why I congratulate you on playing out with Queeg instead of surfing the web looking for more gits to buy.

Sounds like there is a preponderance of people close enough to make it work. I would come... Funny you mention it. I live in Michigan. We were talking about trying to put together a weekend jam next summer. One of my suggestions was to hold it in a campground in the Irish Hills (area west of Detroit - 25 minutes from Ann Arbor). There was some interest in the plan but it sort of faded out. I think some folks aren't big on the idea of camping out. I still want to come up with something a bunch of us could agree on.

There's us (fiddle-upright-guitar-kazoo), another local acoustic group of note, and a great 70's-style hard rock group with a full B3, plus Leslie, on stage. The venue is on Leonard, just west off 131.

There are some really nice camping areas in Michigan and I would go to any of them. I would prefer a spot on one of the great lakes, but anyplace would do
Members Scott Fonseca Posted January 10, 2008 Members Posted January 10, 2008 It would be cool for everyone to get up and meet someday! I am playing my first open mic on Saturday wish me luck!!
Members missedmyexit Posted January 10, 2008 Members Posted January 10, 2008 I've been thinking of trying to get out to an open Mic. This involves trying to my singer motivated enough to maybe run through a practice or two. Anyone know of any open mics in the Boston area?
