Members Stackabones Posted January 11, 2008 Members Posted January 11, 2008 Gear Acquistion Syndrome vs Music Acquistion Syndrome Every now and then I'm afflicted with a bit of GAS, but I'm even more plagued by Music Acquistion Syndrome. I'm such a junky for music. Jonesin' all the time for my next fix. CD, mp3, youtube, sheet music, live, whatever format. :lem: Gotta have it.
Members moctzal Posted January 11, 2008 Members Posted January 11, 2008 MAS. Oh yeah.I probably buy a CD every two weeks...it's so bad...but so good...

Members bigou Posted January 11, 2008 Members Posted January 11, 2008 I bought at least one CD each week, sometimes 2... I always love to try new music and my collection cover a large variety of music (classical, jazz, folk, rock) and everthing in between.
Members TheStoveMan Posted January 11, 2008 Members Posted January 11, 2008 I haven't GAS'd nearly as much in the past couple years as I used to.. I have had a little bit of that. I went on a nice jazz collecting spree though
Members Samilyn Posted January 11, 2008 Members Posted January 11, 2008 I voted MAS. It goes in spurts with me. Seems like I'll go for weeks and not buy something new, then all of a sudden, I'll spot several CDs I really want. As for GAS, I have to save up for anything I want and I really don't need more anyway. Already have enough stringy-thingies to keep me in music heaven for a lifetime. The only thing I can sometimes justify is an upgrade to something. For instance, my banjo is a semi-POS. It sounds decent, but the build quality is typical Chinese - sloppy. If I were playing out more with it or joined a bluegrass band, then I would start saving for a better one.

Members melandy Posted January 11, 2008 Members Posted January 11, 2008 TAS = Tool Acquisition Syndrome
Members EvilTwin Posted January 11, 2008 Members Posted January 11, 2008 I would guess "Tool Acquisition Syndrome." (EDIT: Melandy beat me!) And my vote is definitely for "MAS." I'm always on the lookout for something. Recently I've been on a shopping spree for Django stuff (but only 1947 and after).
Members Freeman Keller Posted January 11, 2008 Members Posted January 11, 2008 TAS = Tool Acquisition Syndrome yeah, baby. So far this winter it has been a new router and a bench sander. I keep running down to where I work to use the band saw, sure would be handy to have my own....

Members Samilyn Posted January 11, 2008 Members Posted January 11, 2008 I'm always on the lookout for re-mastered oldies, too. My latest "find" was Flatt & Scruggs at Carnegie Hall - The Complete Concert." A re-master of their 1962 concert. Lots of great, foot-stompin' old-timey music with a bit of side-splitting humor tossed in. Their rendition of "Old MacDonald Had a Farm" is a scream - I was ROTFLMAO.
Members Cripes Posted January 11, 2008 Members Posted January 11, 2008 Guitars? Too many poorly made decisions have put a governor on my GAS pedal. I have 3 guitars and am looking to get off my butt and sell 2. I thought I had one sold but it turned out to be to a guy looking to get a guitar for his kid - newbie - and I couldn't take $-advantage of the poor guy just to make the sale. Besides, I could just picture the fate of the guitar. MAS? Started writing my own stuff eons ago and have acquired an intense focus on that. Plus, I have a CDS about becoming musically influenced. That's why I can't jam with anyone. If/when I do go to a jam I mostly listen. No one plays my style and I find it uncomfortable to emerge from it. Not stuffy, just anal.

I think that's creative, artistic, and individualistic.
Members Cozmo Posted January 11, 2008 Members Posted January 11, 2008 Hello. My name is Cozmo, and I suffer from Chronic Music Acquisition Syndrome. It's a problem that afflicts millions of people around the world every day, and the solutions are not always easy, quick, or affordable. Millions of people per day who need a balanced diet of rock, indie, and jazz are reduced to listening to poor-quality audio clips and low-quality Quicktime files. But there's hope, and you can help. The next time you go down to your local record shop and pick up a copy of "The Reminder" by Feist, or "Revolver" by the Beatles, or any other staple of a balanced listening diet for that matter, pick up two, and donate one to the Foundation for Chronic Music Acquisition Syndrome. Your donations are guaranteed to go straight to the people who need them, not just tied up in some bureaucratic mess of red tape. You CAN make a difference. You CAN help. Operators are standing by.
Members kwakatak Posted January 11, 2008 Members Posted January 11, 2008 Hehe - in my house TAS means "Toy Acquisition Syndrome" and we're literally swimming in them. The worst are those happy meal toys. I could probably fill up two trash cans with all of them. OTOH, GAS in my house means "Grocery Acquisition Syndrome" because we go at least twice a week to stock up and probably spend enough money a month to buy a Martin 16 series. Sometimes I'm tempted to go back on the PBJ and Ragu diet I was on when I was in college and a svelt 165 pounds. Even getting drunk was cheaper! As for the musical GAS vs. MAS, relatively-speaking I'd say MAS is much more prevalent by about 1000 miles. I don't practice GAS; I just live vicariously through others here. OTOH I don't really buy that many CD's anymore. I prefer to just dial into Youtube or iTunes.
Members EvilTwin Posted January 11, 2008 Members Posted January 11, 2008 Django in Rome 1949-1950? MAS y MAS y MAS Yup, I got that for Christmas. And this: The Rome recordings are great. By that time, Django had smoothly integrated bebop phrasing into his playing (some of his stuff from 1947 was a little less compelling). And it's great hearing him back on the Selmer. The '51-'53 stuff is interesting because it's the last thing he recorded. "Impromptu" sounds modern enough to have been recorded yesterday.
Members Freeman Keller Posted January 11, 2008 Members Posted January 11, 2008 by the way, for you folks who need a music fix - download something from the Annex and put it on your PC or your mp3 player - the price is right, the selection is wonderful and the quality is out of this world

I'll say it again. If anyone is on a slow connection and wants me to burn a cd with all the music on it shoot me a PM with your snail mail addy. It is silly not to be enjoying this and I have it in one folder so it is simple to do. And check in tomorrow - more is going on the Annex tonight...

And it's a simple matter to let the download run while I'm doing other things. The time factor is kind of a non-issue for me.

I do and I've found lots of ways to save a few bucks here and there. For example, money I save at the grocery store every month buys a couple of packs of git strings.
