Members Whalebot Posted January 17, 2008 Members Posted January 17, 2008 It has a fishman active acoustic bridge. Discuss.
Members babablowfish Posted January 17, 2008 Members Posted January 17, 2008 Not at all. I go to lots of open mikes and there are some that are predominantly acoustic and some that are predominantly electric but there are always some acoustic players in the electric ones and some electric players in the acoustic ones. Have fun and let us know how it goes.
Members missedmyexit Posted January 17, 2008 Members Posted January 17, 2008 I think in Open Mics especially since it's mainly a crowd of musicians it's not what you play but how you play it.

Members missedmyexit Posted January 17, 2008 Members Posted January 17, 2008 Poorly. Well that could be a plus.. If you play really bad one of two things will happy: 1. The horribliness of your playing will outshine your strat to the point people forget it's even there. 2. Everyone, overcome with respect for the guts it takes to play that badly in public, surrounds you after the song and argue over who gets to buy you beer.
Members totamus Posted January 17, 2008 Members Posted January 17, 2008 Depends on the open mic. I have been to some that are definitely all acoustic and others that are a mix. You should probably talk to the person running the open mic. Strat.... tsk tsk
Members OldGuitarPlayer Posted January 17, 2008 Members Posted January 17, 2008 I have...plugged my strat copy direct through the PA using my Behringer ADI-21 pre-amp/DI box. I was backing another acoustic performer. It worked fine and I didn't need to haul an amp. I also have a small VOX DA5 5 watt battery powered amp that I have used at open stages too. As long as there are no drums this set-up has worked great.
Members drnihili Posted January 17, 2008 Members Posted January 17, 2008 I think it'll be fine as long as you don't plug it in. You can mic it of course.
Members Queequeg Posted January 17, 2008 Members Posted January 17, 2008 if I can bring pencil lead you can bring strat.
Members riffmeister Posted January 17, 2008 Members Posted January 17, 2008 Open mic is open mic. Do as you please. Just make sure you are fully clothed! .
Members Hudman Posted January 17, 2008 Members Posted January 17, 2008 Only if you play Couldn't Stand the Weather by SRV or Axis Bold as Love by Hendrix.
Members Hudman Posted January 17, 2008 Members Posted January 17, 2008 Open mic is open mic. Do as you please. Just make sure you are fully clothed! . Your rules are too strict.
Members Sparhawk Posted January 17, 2008 Members Posted January 17, 2008 Your rules are too strict. Do not attend an open mic anywhere near Huds house
Members kwakatak Posted January 17, 2008 Members Posted January 17, 2008 I don't see why not. Go for it.
Members Whalebot Posted January 18, 2008 Author Members Posted January 18, 2008 Thanks guys, and Queeq, I was going to try it at an open mic I used to frequent in Pontiac. I think that the Strat, even clean, would overpower our little coffeehouse! And I did just give it a shot upstairs, it really does not sound like an acoustic guitar, like an acoustic guitar does not sound like an electric when pumped through a twin reverb.
Members Cripes Posted January 18, 2008 Members Posted January 18, 2008 Nobody asked why you want to use a Strat and you didn't volunteer a reason so I'm not going to ask either.
Members Whalebot Posted January 18, 2008 Author Members Posted January 18, 2008 Nobody asked why you want to use a Strat and you didn't volunteer a reason so I'm not going to ask either. Oh, right. My Martin can get a bit temperamental when it gets cold and dry up here in Michigan, and since I don't have a kevlar guitar like Queeq I thought that the Strat might be a viable alternative, but the "Acoustic" bridge is really meant for a band situation I think. I'll just et my Martin warm up in it's case.
Members Queequeg Posted January 18, 2008 Members Posted January 18, 2008 you can use my recycled fighter jet, Whale.(I think it's a ground up MIG-25)
Members Berkleo Posted January 18, 2008 Members Posted January 18, 2008 .................... 2. Everyone, overcome with respect for the guts it takes to play that badly in public, surrounds you after the song and argue over who gets to buy you beer. I worship your logic.
Members Cripes Posted January 18, 2008 Members Posted January 18, 2008 you can use my recycled fighter jet, Whale.(I think it's a ground up MIG-25) Never played a Faux Foxbat. Bet it's fast.
Members kwakatak Posted January 18, 2008 Members Posted January 18, 2008 I'm kinda curious; what tunes did you plan on playing? Also, what technique: strumming, flatpicking or fingerstyle? Those Strats can be pretty versatile just as long as you don't use that bridge pickup IMO.
Members Samilyn Posted January 18, 2008 Members Posted January 18, 2008 You're not defecting to The Dark Side, are you, Whale?
Members garthman Posted January 18, 2008 Members Posted January 18, 2008 Of course you can use a strat. I have three electric guitars: a cheap (very) but cheerful strat copy which I chop logs with; a Yamaha Pacifica (which I suppose is also a strat copy but IMO better than genuine ones); and a lovely vintage (c. 1972) Kay/Hondo Les Paul copy. I play all of them exactly the same way I play my acoustics - fingerpick, strum, etc.
Members C70man Posted January 18, 2008 Members Posted January 18, 2008 Do it! Martins, at least older ones, don't travel that well in your kind of weather. Wouldn't be worth the future problems. If it has strings, a bridge, nut, tuners, and a fret board, well then its legal to me. I saw Sting once, all by himself, playing a strat. He used a lot of chorus on his amp, but it sounded great. No, it actually sounded pretty incredible. And I'm picky.
