Sliced my RH index nail cooking one day, and didn't want to lose it. Wento to the nail shop, where they applied fiberglass powder with some solvent liquid (is this acrylics?). I ended up with a thick hard fingerpick that has been quite a lot of fun. As it is growing out I'm wondering about what happens next - does it fall off at some point? And should I get a new one?

Yes, what you got is considered an "acrylic nail."

No, you don't necessarily have to get a whole new one. As this one grows out, you can have the nail shop do what's called a "fill in." A good salon tech will check the nail closely for any signs of fungus or damage to your natural nail, then fill in the base with more acrylic and smooth the whole thing again.

No, they usually don't fall off, but can be removed if you so desire. Acetone dissolves them.

Alternatively, if you don't want to keep the acrylic nail, you can simply let your own nail keep growing and keep filing back the acrylic to the desired length. Eventually, it will be gone.
