Members Krash Posted January 23, 2008 Members Posted January 23, 2008 Just getting back to what passes for normal around here, and want to thank everyone who responded to my distress call. Wasn't able to get back to the board, and my Dad, who is 80 and a tad squirrelly, wasn't much help relaying information. Got disgusted and did a scratch recovery ( FORMAT C:). Been spending a lot of time reinstalling hardware drivers, apps, running virus/adware scans, and poking about the registry, trying to get my computer back to where it was. Was kind of creepy wiping out the last 10 years of my life, but I've retained pretty good backup habits from the old days, so it doesn't appear I''ve lost anything important. Reloading the OS cleared up some longstanding glitches that had accumulated over time, and Verizon's tireless efforts to bring me DSL has resulted in a 40-50% increase in my dialup speed. Unfortunately, DSL is still working erratically - over the past couple of days, speed has been as high as 400 kbs (I'm paying for 768) to a low of 15 kbs this a.m. Have the modem turned off now - it causes static on the line that cuts my dialup speed in half. Appears to be a lost cause. Would also like to thank Dave, Mark, Freeman, and everyone else who was involved in the "Krash Kaper". Hopefully no one will be offended if I decline your unexpected (and undeserved) generosity. My computer is working fine, and will allow me to continue meeting my responsibilities as proprietor of the Annex. In a world where few things work like they should, I've developed an attachment to those that have served me well, among them my old Compaq Presario (since '97), my truck - the Grey Ghost (since '86), and, of course, my beloved Harmony 1260 (since '69). Good to be back.
Members rjoxyz Posted January 23, 2008 Members Posted January 23, 2008 Welcome back. Expected to see you back on a new pony, but here you are on the old steed!
Members riffmeister Posted January 23, 2008 Members Posted January 23, 2008 Yo! Welcome (back) to the Monkey House!
Members Freeman Keller Posted January 23, 2008 Members Posted January 23, 2008 Welcome back, 'bro. We've got some work to do but it can wait another day or two. Reconsider too, we want you to have the right tools to feed our Annex jones.

Good to be back. Hey, welcome back Krash. I gotta Presario 97 too! I haven't used her in a while, but I'm in the process of trying to get her back up to speed: increase her memory 96 MB SyncDRAM, upgradable to 256 MB, upgrade my hardrive from 8.O gigs to 30, and maybe "soup up" the processor. Can't decide if I'm going to go with Linux or XP. :blah: Did you need to know all this? Glad you're back Krash and thank you so much for your part in making the Annex a reality. Cheers.Trina

Members OldGuitarPlayer Posted January 23, 2008 Members Posted January 23, 2008 Welcome back Krash!!! I totally understand about your attachment to your old computer. G.A.S. is not an issue for me when it comes to computers. I used an old 1997 Hewlett Packard up until last year. When my dad passed away last summer I inherited his new DELL laptop so I am good to go for another 10 years.All the best!OGP
Members garthman Posted January 23, 2008 Members Posted January 23, 2008 Welcome back - sorry to hear about your troubles. A new computer would sort them all out, believe me!
Members babablowfish Posted January 23, 2008 Members Posted January 23, 2008 Welcome back. You have made a great contribution to all of us with the Annex.
Members Samilyn Posted January 23, 2008 Members Posted January 23, 2008 Welcome back, Krash. I've missed you. Krash, won't you please reconsider and accept our gift? Pleeeeeeeze! Believe me, I know what it is to patch up a favorite computer, but have things start going wrong again after a month or two or few. I have been doing that for over a year now and it's no fun. I think I speak for all of us involved in the Krash Kaper when I say we'd like to spare you further computer hassles. The Annex aside, we all consider you a good friend and a highly valued member of our community. {HUG}

Members Broadus Posted January 23, 2008 Members Posted January 23, 2008 Ditto to Samilyn. You will be much more efficient with a much faster computer with a much larger hard disk drive. An eleven-year-old computer really needs a retirement party! Besides, your work with the Annex is too valuable not to have a 21st-century system. Bill

Update your electronics, Krash!!
