Members Cripes Posted January 28, 2008 Members Posted January 28, 2008 This is the guitar my boss bought. He leaves it at work. Today I had to go there to do a couple chores so I sat down with it and played for about an hour unplugged. Not a regular Martin sound, for sure, but well balanced and sweet sounding. One complaint: quiet. This one has the solid spruce top and solid EIR fretboard, unlike its brother that has the micarta board. Back and sides are HPL done up in the "Tawny Satinwood" look, whatever that is. I was playing with fingernails and thumbpick - my usual tools - but I could not get any volume in the bass range at all. Played lightly, it sounded pretty balanced. Start digging and the mids and trebles respond pretty well leaving the bass in the next room. I did not try it plugged but I'm pretty sure everything will come up in the mix then. 2 cents.
Members guitarist21 Posted January 28, 2008 Members Posted January 28, 2008 My buddy has an X series dread and I totally agree with you. Its a cool sound: balanced, clear, etc. But it is freaking quiet for a Martin dread. I've liked the 000X1's I've played, maybe because I wasn't expecting them to be loud. But when I pick up a guitar as big as a Martin dread, I expect a little more oomph than I got from the DCX1. Now what I don't know anything about is this Tawn Satinwood thing. Ellen
Members Cripes Posted January 28, 2008 Author Members Posted January 28, 2008 The Tawny Satinwood is the finish of the exterior of the HPL. So sayeth Martin, anyway. When you look inside the guitar in looks like the unfinished side of countertop laminate (formica) material, not that there's anything wrong with that... Tomorrow I'll try it plugged into a Fender Acoustisonic.
