This is a new Melodeous Lyric, to which I have written a melody - but most of the credit must go to Krash who, through a comment at the Annex, inspired the whole thing. Still at the 'rough' stage, with a bit of polishing this will be a fixture in my repertoire!

I was sitting in my guitar room one evening just looking around. It's a cozy little room that I get so much enjoyment from. It's a place where I get to fullfill my creative and artistic needs.

Well, the scene around me got my imagination running and this little story popped out. The video just seemed like a good way to give it some life.

While the story is a product of my imagination, the journel is real.

I hope you all like it.

The Songsmith -- Christian Carnucci

Intro:

Verse 1:

Old time guitars,

hung from the walls

A journal lies open at an unfinished song.

Verse 2:

Lines on a page,

weathered from age.

Handwritten words now, beginning to fade.

Pre-chorus 1:

I thumb through the verses,

penned through the years.

Some of the pages stained by tears.

Verse 3:

But I read ever line,

and I lose track of time,

as the words of the songsmith

dance through my mind.

Chorus:

Dreams he wove,

in the songs he sung.

A tapestry is what he spun.

The scenes described,

they came alive,

as he shared his life with everyone.

Intro:

Verse 4:

He sang about love,

fortune and life.

How they all slip away like,

a thief in the night.

Verse 5:

He sang about pain,

freedom and fame.

How every man's loss is,

another man's gain.

Pre-chorus 2:

The songs spoke of wisdom,

gained through the years.

of the trials and virtues of facing fears.

Verse 6:

He sang about waste,

redemption and grace.

How the wisest of all know,

the value of faith.

Repeat Chorus:

Intro:

Verse 7:

The stories went on,

as song after song,

he told of his life with his wife and his son.

Verse 8:

And through out the years,

one thing was clear,

family was most what the songsmith held dear.

Pre-chorus 3:

The evening grew colder,

and the shadows grew long,

when I found myself back at the unfinished song.

Verse 9:

So I picked up a pen,

and I read it again,

then I finished the song that,

my father began.

Repeat Chorus:

Has it been a month already?!? Sweet! That means I get a whole batch of new songs to listen to this coming week :D

Title: Dead Flowers

Originally By: The Rolling Stones

Yes, this is a Stones tune, but, I first learned of its existence as a GnR cover that they'd perform live at concerts.

This is my acoustic rendition of the tune. In true GnR fashion, I'm tuned down 1/2 a step. Originally, my intent was to add my own vocals to this track... considering it is one of the few tunes I can manage to play and sing. However, after giving a shot, I ultimately felt that people would probably prefer if I'd just kept my mouth shut ;-) So, instead, I cooked up a "vocal" track on my guitar. The video also includes an improvised solo. It's nothing too special, but, I kinda dug the sound of it so it made it into the final rendition.

Feedback is always appreciated :) Here's hoping someone enjoys it!

Chris

I wrote this song for some parishioners and our parochial vicar, Fr. Jason Cargo, all of whom went on a five-day walking pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. This performance is at a church event, the Fra Angelico CoffeeHaus, which features artists and musicians from the parish.

That's my Morgan Monroe MV-01 and I'm using some PA that was provided -- a Fender iirc and the mics are Shure SM58ish of some kind.

Compostela means "field of stars". If you wish, you may check out the "studio" version on my blog.

Compostela (A Field Of Stars)

Walk through a field of stars

Leave your dust behind

Keep your staff moving

Let the road clear your mind

Walk through a field of stars

The path can't be changed

The way ahead is worn

The way back ain't the same

Compostela

Compostela

Compostela

Walk through a field of stars

Picking up some shells

Just over that hill

You can hear bells

Walk through a field of stars

Below the Milky Way

Flashing flowers above

Shining on St James

Here in Roma the sun is up and I hear the bickering seagulls and the church bells through the windows of the Palazzo Cenci. Was going to post something recorded in the stairwell last night for VOM, but this one's more timely:

http://www.box.net/shared/ey9eiebqv0

I wrote this song 3 years ago for Lauren, before we met. Now we're here in Roma co-teaching an Urban Design studio/History of Rome semester. Lauren's birthday is coming up, and so is mine. Hers is July 14 (Bastille Day), and mine is July 16. The most significant thing that happened on my birthday was the first nuclear device detonation, at Alamagordo, New Mexico.

[[[Have just edited this post to replace the originally-submitted 1.5-year-old recording with a brand new one, done just 6 hours ago. Much more "of the moment", and much more in the spirit of VOM. I went out to the stairwell of the Palazzo Cenci and recorded the song 1-take, using my $10 pawnshop guitar and my Zoom H2. Also in the lyrics I have replaced the repeated half-verse ending with a new ending.]]]

Lyrics for "Happy Birthday (Lauren)"

Happy Birthday to you

An auspicious day/storming the Bastille

All the bells tolled/and all those heads rolled

Change was in the works/it was a change to believe in

What's a girl to do/wanna make it all come true

In the fog-bound city or a cave in the sun

Make a wish/blow out the candles one by one

Happy birthday to me

An auspicious day/four years ago

No bells were tolling/mushroom cloud explosion

Alamagordo/from the middle of nowhere a shot heard 'round the world

What can I do/wanna make it all come true

There's a castle on a hill/I can see it from the middle of nowhere

Make a wish on the morning star/make another song for you

What's a girl to do/wanna make it all come true

A pilgrimage across the bridge of angels/up the seven hills

I make a wish on the morning star/make another song for you

Queequeg - Simply Beautiful! I like what you did at the end with the harmonic and the air tremolo.

Garthman - Petty has so many great songs! I like your solo acoustic arrangement of this one!

Fendouglas - Excellent!! Inspiring writing, singing and performance!

bludog79 - This song touches me to the core...I have a little 5 1/2 year old bay and everyday with him is a gift. I know they will be gone all too soon. IMO this is an instant classic on par with cats in the cradle (do I hear a little Croce influence in there?)!

Oldskool_Texas - I love the laid back feel of this excellent song of yours!! It has a great Neil Young/CSNY feel especially when th tasteful electric leads come in!

chriscarnucci - Springsteen once said that writing great songs involves peeling back the layers to reveal more and more of oneself and you song reminds me of this. EXCELLENT SONG!!

FussenKuh - Always liked the Stones verison of this song and I liked your guitar vocal idea. Really liked the twang in your lead guitar!

Stackabones - Like that live perfromance video and excellent song! Your intro really helped me understand what inspired your song!

Michael Martin - Wonderful song! Takes me on a journey listening. Like the guitar tone too!! (Ah Roma!! Wish I was there again. Been there a few times, had friends attending the Institute for Art Hiistory and Urban Planning. Italy is like a second home for us!)

I just have to add that after listening to the entries so far this has been an excellent showcase of original songs.

Here's an original song collaboration and a full band effort using a one take solo acoustic performance as the basic track and building on it.

Song is called Fallin' Fallin' and credits are::

Lyrics co-written by Sue Mrithujayan & Gil

Music by Gil

Acoustic guitar and lead vocal: Gil

Harmony vocal Jane Hall

Bass; Charlie Betts

Electric Rhythm guitar: Charlie Betts

Drums: Dave Barry

http://gilsmusic.bandcamp.com/track/fallin-fallin

PS: The photo is of my uncle (just before he went to Vietnam in 1967) kissing his high school sweetheart.

They drifted apart during his tour of duty and then about 5 years ago met again and got married!

She was a keyboard player in a rock band back then and I remember the gigs well.

If you are interested to see the video of the original solo acoustic performance without the band I posted it earlier in this HCAG thread:

Here is my entry... another song I wrote many years ago. It was on an album in 1992 and I have played it live more times than I can recall.

added: This actually happened on Interstate 80 driving east to west from the Pocono Mountains to Columbus, Ohio. I was going to visit my brother. When I got to his place I wrote down the lyrics I had in my head in his livingroom. When I went home to the Poconos, I recorded it and it was on the subsequent album.

This is a new one of mine, based on a poem my wife wrote.

Hope you don't mind that I cheated a little this time around. I DID record the guitar and vox in one take but then added a few overdubs.

I used my Tanglewood Sundance acoustic and overdubbed with a (midi) stand-up bass, (midi) drumkit, (real) bongos and, believe it or not, the thing that sounds like a pedal-steel guitar is actually my Ibanez RG (they don't just shred )

I'm definitely going to redo the vocal as it's a little pitchy in places but overall I'm pleased with this one. Hope you enjoy :)

Riant

Lyric:

I'm tired of all depressing stuff, I think I've finally done enough

no I'm not mad any more at all the things I was before

It's really just a joke, the things of which I spoke

the pain and all the lies bring tears of laughter to my eyes

Yes, I can barely hold it in, the traffic jams just make me grin

the people glaring on the street give me such a tickled treat

It's really just a joke, the things of which I spoke

the pain and all the lies bring tears of laughter to my eyes

Adverts with their boorish style never fail to make me smile

and if the news knows what they say the world gets funnier every day

The biggest joke of all, while people scratch and crawl

while all the world is doing wrong, tomorrow they may drop the bomb

I guess when I soaked all this in all I could do was sit and grin

so now that's all I ever do and through the bars, admire the view

the nurse sedates me twice a day to stop me laughing my breath away

Good Morning. Sweet Virginia. Stones cover from Exile on Main St......recorded on the Zoom with a C harp in the rack. Did this on the 4th of July. Figured it a tribute to all the Virginians involved in the break from British tyranny. Who knew they'd hit us with this Gulf of Mexico oil leak 235 years later? Unforgiving, those Brits....

Just a couple fiddle tunes on banjo. I'm not terribly proud of my playing here, but I am proud of the story:

This banjo belong to my late grandfather. My grandma, in spite of the grief she was experiencing letting his stuff go, gave me the banjo when she took me to a Cubs game for my 15th birthday (how's THAT for a birthday present). Less than a year later, her house burned down, and basically the only things that were saved were the things that she had given away.

My grandma is currently undergoing radiation treatments for cancer and I'm trying to send her one cool thing a week to keep her spirits up. In honor of her Irish heritage, I have hacked away at these classic fiddle tunes. ;)

Oklahoma State Line Blues

http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m3u?id=9382219&q=hi

And a second version, much improved....

http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m3u?id=9387349&q=hi

Lyrics...

I was just a kid

In them lonely hills

I learned about the world's exotic places

Where the people ride

In the limousines

And walk around with bullrings in their face

Now my one desire

Yeah to go my way

Has laid me down with the devil everywhere

Now there's only one

Road left to follow

Highway won't you please lead me there

The Oklahoma state line blues

Yeah the Oklahoma state line blues

I been running all around trying to find a clue

Headed back home now there's nothing I can do

It's the Oklahoma state line blues

Oklahoma state line blues

So I headed south

Down to New Orleans

Heard about good times down on Bourbon Street

All the pretty girls

Dancing til the dawn

Not the ones that your momma wants to meet

Bottle of whiskey

Lord and too much wine

Supposed that's where my troubles all began

Sleeping in my bed

A burly lady

In retrospect I suspect she was a man

Oklahoma state line blues

It's the Oklahoma state line blues

I been running all around

Acting like a fool

Headed back home now there's nothing left to lose

It's the Oklahoma state line blues

Yeah the Oklahoma state line blues

Then I headed west

California way

To find a wise man living by the sea

Well he loves to share

His ruminations

If you'll sit down with him and have some tea

May he lift me up

From my selfish deeds

Set me upon a straighter avenue

Well he shook my hand

Then he shook his head

Whispered "Listen friend now you know there's nothing new"

The Oklahoma state line blues

Yeah the Oklahoma state line blues

I been running all around trying to find a clue

Headed back home now there's nothing I can do

It's the Oklahoma state line blues

Oklahoma state line blues

Now when I sat down

To collect my thoughts

An introspective accounting of where I been

Far too many days

Were once tomorrows

Convinced myself that there ain't no way to win

But I come to know

That my state of mind

Ain't no way connected to where I sit

So I put my blues

Away forever

And told myself I believe it's time to git

The Oklahoma state line blues

Yeah the Oklahoma state line blues

I been running all around trying to find a clue

Headed back home now there's nothing I can do

It's the Oklahoma state line blues

Oklahoma state line blues

And it's true

Baby I'm finding my way home to you

Greetings

My submission is a song from Angels On Fyre titled Secrata Noctis. This is one of my mellower, dare I say introspective pieces. The performance isn't the best, the heat and humidity in here is dulling both the guitar and my brain, but this will have to do.

Give a listen and let me know what you think

Thanks

Tony

Well I can't figure out why I can't embed the video and it is making me crazy so here is the link.

Not too long ago the sound guy at an open mic that I go to recorded an audio of me and sent it to me in an email.

I thought it would be cool to post it here because it is a recording of me at an open mic.

It's an original song called... Run Away.

Hope you like it.

I've been wanting to contribute to the VOM for some time. It seems I never have anything ready. This is no exception, - Another half learned tune.

It started out as Ed Gerhard's version of Wild Mountain Thyme. I lost focus after a while (as always) and just ended up noodling around the bits I did learn. Seem a familiar tale to anyone?:cop:.

My first vom contribution (Don't laugh).

Great music! Chris Carnucci - great tune, lots of cool imagery

Stackabones - love the song, but what I loved even more was your dedication to the missionaries.

I listen to as many as I can today, but I must confess, that as

I type this, I am sitting on the beach in Honolulu. All the best guys I'll get some more feedback up later today
