Members Jimmy Chaos
Is it just me that finds that using cat guts for strings abhorrent? Especially when there are alternatives (like Stack suggested) which produce tone just as well.

They're not actually made from cats, rather from sheep or goat intestines (occasionally, other sources).http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catgut

Members garthman
Garth, Best sticking with the UK yer own Country as the usa guys would do likewise also which makes sense Well - I just put up links to a UK supplier and a US supplier in case forumites from either location wanted to get hold of these strings. They are the only readily available gut set that I know of and although they may seem expensive it would cost a lot more to buy from one of the few specialist string makers out there (some of them charge more than the cost of the La Bella set per string ). Members Opa John
I priced a set of catgut fiddle strings one time for an old Kalamazoo fiddle that I'd bought at a good price. The strings would've cost more than I paid for the fiddle!!

Members Theflyingturtle
I came across a set of cat gut strings once a long time ago. They were horrible!!! They sounded lousy, the wouldn't stay in tune, they smelled funny, and and it was a little creepy touching them. I wanted to see what it was like before plastic was invented. It must have sucked! Members GuitarVlog
In the US, inquire with stringsbymail.com or order direct from their website. Mind you, gut strings are very expensive. You may want to instead try synthetic gut by Aquila (aka NylGut). These are also available from stringsbymail.com. Members GuitarVlog
[video=youtube;0iTasqplOtQ] [video=youtube;2_Cwe_pz0Uo] At 00:54 of the second video, they show the production of gut strings. Observe carefully as they slice the cats open with a machete. Viewer discretion is advised.
