I need some help here. Since I got a mac I can no longer access my website that I created from home using Frontpage. It's pretty much sitting there dead on the net, with the only thing current being the google calendar that it is linked to.

Wouldn't mind spending $150 again for some kind of do it yourself oiftware again, though I admit I have zero time to work on it right now and have no idea what I should get. Somebody suggested Godaddy.com. You create your own site through them. I'm looking it over. Wondered if anyone had any other suggestions. I may just scale my website way back and have a basic one now through Godaddy, and then a link to a band Facebook page, or whatever.

Any advise greatly appreciated.

Hi--Ive been using Bandzoogle for a couple of years...works great, easy to use. They are set up for musicians/bands....easy to use.You can even change backgrounds/colors,etc anytime you feel like it without changing any of your info.Around $150 per year.

Whatever you do,make sure it has a standalone URL- like "www.rockerdiva.com" . I see a lot of guys who have addresses like "www.hostingsite.com/bandpages/nameofbandhere.html" and then can't figure out why they get no web traffic.

I'm a FT web guy who does sites for small business.

IMO, your best bet is a simple facebook page.

If you need "more", a good option is using one of the hosting service's "installer based" wordpress setups...

BTW, I far, far prefer hostgator or bluehost or liquid host to godaddy, which is kind of the AOL of hosting providers. My personal choice is this reseller here:

http://www.acornhost.com/

I dunno if they really are all that progressive, but they are inexpensive and very, very good.

Anyhow, regardless of your host the basic idea is that you go into your hosting control panel and install wordpress-- most shared hosting control panels will let you do this pretty easily by just going to an installer page and pushing a button..

There are a whole lot of inexpensive themes, but I prefer the cheap ones at themeforest-- they are $30-45 and most come with pretty comprehensive instructions for setting up the site to work like their demos.... that's really what you are paying for, IMO.

A wp site can do a whole lot more than whatever site generator will do for you and be a lot more flexible in the long run, not to mention the fact that there are a whole lot of people who can work on them if you need outside help.

The days if spending time in an HTML editor on your machine to make a personal/small scale website are long gone. Frontpage, et al, are relics.

Bandzoogle, Facebook and Wordpress are good options that were discussed here.

Also, GoDaddy is a horrible registrar/hosting company. Avoid if at all possible.

I just used them to buy the domain. I just started my website with blog software called Wordpress. It's still very much in progress. I'll show it off when it's a little more complete. :)

Not sure about their "easy website" stuff, but I have virtual dedicated server with them and it's been solid.

I've been sending most of my business elsewhere lately since GoDaddy publicly backed SOPA. That may not be important to you though...

I use webeden.co.uk (sitemaker). Costs about $9 a month plus (if I remember rightly) a one-off registration fee (can't remember how much, but not expensive) for a non-webeden domain name, really easy to design your own website. Have had no problems whatsoever in the 2 years my website has been up.

Well, wait a minute you guys. dannysigma said it was easy to make his website. I checked it out (assuming it's that URL in the signature). It's pretty nice. I almost want to switch. Does it take special website programming knowledge to make those cool drop down menus?

I have no programming knowledge whatsoever. It was really easy to use: pick a template and then alter/add to as necessary. Content aside, that website took a couple of hours messing about

Totally agree with this. You should have a domain that you control. Facebook is booming right now, but so was myspace at one point.

The one tip I will give is to ensure that no matter who you get for a hosting company ensure that there is room to grow. Starting with a shared hosting plan is fine when you don't have a lot of traffic ion the beginning but hopefully at some point you will need to move into a VPS and finally a dedicated server. So try and find someone that you will be happy with that also offers the higher plans and services that you can move into without hassle. This forum has many that have their own accounts so this is a great place to ask. However, try a little google search for things like "Hosting for musicians", etc. Stick to the forums where honest answers from those who have had actual experience with companies are.

Just my 2 cents - Good Luck!

Why not register a domain name and redirect traffic to your band's Facebook page? That way you have less sites to maintain.

There's not much value in creating a half-assed site using some host's site generator. When you have the time, money and inclination to invest in a serious stand-alone web presence then get something produced professionally.

A word of warning.

Before you go to register a domain name, you usually check to see if the domain name is already in use. DO NOT USE GODADDY.COM, REGISTER.COM OR ANY OTHER SERVICE OTHER THAN WHOIS.NET TO CHECK TO SEE IF A DOMAIN NAME IS AVAILABLE! Why? Because any of the other sites may, and often will - themselves register names that are being researched for availability, and then make that domain name available to purchase. This has happened to me. One day about a year ago, I checked the availability of a domain name using GoDaddy - a madeup name that no one else in a million years would think to use. I went back the next day to register it, and it was now taken and being offered for sale by a company directly associated with GoDaddy. I discovered by Googling the issue at the time that this underhanded practice happens a lot. WHOIS.net is the official keeper of the domain names, and I have never had a similar problem with them, and I don't know of others who have either. But, who knows? :)

Well, I went ahead and used bandzoogle and it was super easy.

If anyone wants to check it out, I'll put my address here.

I have a wierd situation, I'm trying to make it a dual purpose site.

Basically -I have been a soloist for 25+ years, but I also

want to promote the band and not have them seem like a sideline.

It's a balancing act. Any suggestions welcolmed. I know I wont get any as that would require a seperate post. BUT - again, if anybody wants to see a sample of just one of the things you can do with bandzoogle, it's here.

And just like dannysigma said about doing his site, content aside, putting up the site took just a few hours of messing around.

@rockdiva, Nice! I think your site came out great.

I have liked Bandzoogle for what they offer. I think they are in the process of overhauling the design platform as well. I have played with it a little. Still not as flexible as something like a WordPress site, but you get what you need.

The best thing about Bandzoogle is, you get the most important pieces all in one package: website (with your own domain), email service and store front (and bandzoogle doesn't take a cut of your sales like CD Baby, Topspin or Nimbit). I do think it is possible to outgrow Bandzoogle, but it may never happen and it is easy to integrate Topspin with the Bandzoogle platform if needs be.
